Are transducers interchangeable as long as the frequencies are the same? Or will they only work with each specific unit? The reason I ask is I lost one breaking the ice out last fall.
You will need a transducer that is made for your make and model of sonar. Transducer are not interchangable between different makes, even if they are on the same operating frequency.

Not entirely true. Lowrance transducers will work with new and old as long as the frequency is right. You can purchase adapters from Lowrance for gray to black, black to gray. I have an old X-15B (for sale by the way) that I changed the old red connectors in the back to gray, bought a gray transducer on ebay and now it can be used interchangeably with my old X-60. They work great. Other things that I have done is made connectors on the coax cable for the transducer, adjusted the lengths and used a switch box to connect 2 different transducers in 2 different locations on the boat. I would suggest to try to stick with the same manufacturer but frequency is the key. (I have a degree in electronics).
Yes, it is true that there are adapters available for different models within the same manufacture, by the way eagle and lowrance use alot of the same transducers, but they are basically the same company(lowrance owns eagle). I would suggest though, if you don't have a electronics degree, not to try to manufacture adapters on your own and expect the tranducer to work very well. Just purchase the transducer made to operate with your sonar and you will be back in business.
