My first fishing tournament is this Saturday at Lake Thompson. I have not fished there yet this year. I usually fish Chamberlain this time of year and head to Thompson when the water warms at the river so I have very little Knowledge of fish location for this time of year. If anyone has some hot spots that they might share with me it would be greatly appreciated. Also any advice presentation or baits?

Thanks in advance

What tournament is that? I have nothing to do this weekend, and if my boat is running, looking for one to jump in.

Email me at wilkens@earthlink.net and I'll try to hook you up with some ideas to try.

Same here. Let me know about the tournament as well. dtaylor@epremierbank.com

I haven't fished on Thompson for over a year, and I am also like you, I usually wait until late May or June to fish at Thompson.

Fished there yesterday and it was terrible. I think the weather has hampered fishing recently but the lake hasn't taken off yet. Water is in the real low 50's so probable a post-spawn situation right now. Saw a few other boats out yesterday and they were having a tough time also.
Anyone have a good report from here recently.

Thanks!

I would fish in the back bays if you can get there. That is where alot of people fish early in the spring.

I was there on Saturday. I was surprised how few people were out. I launched at the State Park and there were only 5 other trailers there. The water temp was about 50-51 around the entire lake, all the way down to the Oldham road. I tried the northern end stump field, the northern inlet, the brown log house on the west side, the humps off of the silo on the east side, the flat down near the Oldham road, the trees down there too. Not one lousy fish. I fished shallow, deep, fast, slow, live bait, spinners, planer boards...nothing worked. The lake is full of moss everywhere. Even if not on bottom, the moss was as thick as pea soup. Hopefully the fishing will pick up, the fishing there isn't what it was 4-5 years ago...Good luck to you on your tourney!

Stop in and talk with Ray at Mac's Bait in Lake Preston.
He will be your best, and most reliable source to find out about the bite.

On monday, I also noticed the moss and green stuff. Its everywhere on the lake. Fish that lake all the time and have never seen it this bad. Makes fishing almost impossible. Anyone know what's up.

Thanks!

I wish I had a hot spot, it's more of a general trend. I'd try it up in shaeffer slough if you can get up there. It may be too shallow. Specifically on the very northeast and northwest ends, where there should be water flowing in. Another specific spot would be to go under the oldham bridge, and fish that old creek channel, since the weeds have probably not grown out there yet and the water should be nice and warm. I'm betting there's some current there too. I don't know if your tournament rules will allow you to go under the bridge, or if your boat is capable of going under, so check on that. Otherwise, keep it shallow. Work trees and rocks casting plugs and jigs to the shore, specifically where there is some wave action. The oldham grade is a good spot for this, kinda like the riprap at chamberlain :). One other spot. On the south end of the lake, there is an old road bed that runs east and west and intersects the old creek channel. This is about a mile north of the oldham road. Right where the road meets the creek channel is a snag pile, but you can usually catch some fish on slip bobbers there, especially when all else fails. Or you can troll plugs east and west along that road bed, should be about 7 feet deep or so on top of it.

If my boat is running, I might be out there friday or saturday. I have a warrior 166 tiller. I'll keep an eye out for you if I make it.

Hope this helps you some,
