I have never fished on mille lacs before can anybody help me out. Can i get some info. on where to start looking for some slot fish. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks
I have fished the lake for 20 years and if you can find a 14-16 slot, I would also like to know where they are. My experience with the slot is this; the DNR is trying to curb the harvest and they do so by imposing a slot that requires you may keep only the fish you can not find. They seem to managing the harvest (lbs taken) not the lake.
I would rather eat steak anyway.
PS. I recently seen the 14-16" Mille Lacs Lake Walleye on the endagerned species list pubilshed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
I think it was #3.

Finding fish on Mille Lacs can be easy in the spring when there are a zillion boats out there. At the very least, just look for the flotillas and do what the Romans are doing. Depending on wind, plan on slip bobbering with leeches, lindy rigging with minnows or leeches, or even trolling a crank if you can find a semi-empty reef. Drifting points or reefs with live bait presentations can be good too. Get a reelbottom or whiffer map and pick a reef. There will be boats on the flats too but the majority of the activity will be on the reefs early in the year. You'll have a great time. The slot can be a challenge though. Plan on letting a lot of 20" walleyes go.
The sand on the east and north east side will be good too. There will be good fishing within a couple miles of your boat launch regardless of where you put in.
Just don't start up the frying pan in anticipation of what you'll bring to shore.
