There are no walleyes in Montana west of the Continental Divide officially, though I've heard that a few bucket biologists are trying to illegally introduce them there. Some of the more western waters in the state that have walleyes are Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter reservoirs. -- mark

Well I don't live there but I have been in Western Montana a few times hunting. I was near a little town called "Valier" that is about 20 miles straight south of "Cut Bank." The town sits on a lake called Lake Frances. Although I never fished it, I was told there are Walleyes in it.

If you need more info drop me a e-mail and I can try and answer some of your questions..

Yes there are walleye in Western Montana. As stated above Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter Resevoirs all contain walleye. They are dams on the upper end of the Missouri river system.

Other Montana waters containing walleye(not necessarily western MT) are

1. Fort Peck and Missouri river from ND border up to Toston Dam
2. Nelson Resevoir
3. Fresno Resevoir and the Milk River down stream from the dam
4. Tiber Resevoir
5. Lake Frances
6. Bynum Resevoir
7. Sections of the Yellowstone river (Yellowtail Resevoir)
8. All the rest I am missing

There are no lakes or rivers in Western Montana that have an established walleye population. I define western Montana as everything west of the continential divide. The lakes that do have walleye in them are in central and eastern Montana. Central area lakes are Canyon Ferry, Hauser, Holter, Missouri river, Bynum, Francis, Tiber, Fresno and Daly lake. There are several lakes in Eastern Montana that have walleye, mainly Ft. Peck, Nelson,Bighorn Res, Cooney, Petrolia and Tounge river res. to name a few. Plenty to choose from but Ft.Peck is the shining star.

Good fishin!

Go back a year or so and look in your 'Walleye-Insider'. I believe there are eyes in the Clark Fork river behind Noxon Dam (Noxon Reservoir i think it is called). It is assumed that, as stated, some bucket biologist planted them illegally. I'm not sure if the population is fishable, if it is on the increase, or any other particulars. If this is true (and I assume that it is because much of the information was supplied by fisheries dept.) it won't be long before the entire system contains eyes. I think the article I'm refering to was about the range and distribution of eyes. Anyway you may want to check it out
