Is there anyone out there who is knowledgeable with this engine? The reason I ask is that I have a 1999 90 HP that I purchased new and have had nothing but problems with it from the getgo ( plugs fowling ). This Dec 8th, lucky for me, the power head went out. OMC put a new power head on but I do not have much faith this will help. I do know that when Evenrude first came out with the Ficht in the 175 HP and up they recalled a lot of them and put new power heads on them to take care the the problem they were having. Since the 90 HP came out after the 175 HP in 1999 I'm hoping that this will cure my problems also.

Sorry to hear about your 90hp problem Wavewacker. I had a simmilar incident with mine also. I didn't even get 9hrs of break-in time on mine before I needed a new power head . I was told that I had a cylinder wash out, which translated to not getting oil but only gas. I got a new power head and haven't had any problems with the new one. I run it on a 1600 Crestliner Superhawk which it can handle quite well. It runs me about 36-38mph, great fuel economy, and I can backtroll with it as well! Hope your troubles are cured for you with a new power head.

Mike: Thanks for the response. My problem was too much carbon build up. I did everything possible per OMC's recomendation, carbon gaurd in the gas, indexed my plugs, three plug variations that came from OMC, new snythetic oil, series 31 battery, and keeping my rpm's close to 6,000 rpms. This all came from OMC and I still could not get more than two hours on a set of plugs before they fouled out. I sure hope the new power head takes care of my problem, I'm runnig this on a Lund Pro V 1660 with a 8 HP kicker. I like the motor when it runs good but in the past that is not very often. The plugs, at $14 ea. are breaking me up. I have a couple spare sets in the glove for each fishing trip. Thanks again for responding and I'm glad to hear yous is ok. By the way what plugs are you using in yours?
If you got a 2001 power head, you should be fine. It has the latest Ram Ficht technology. The "older" engines didn't have it and carbon was a big problem. Make sure you burn Ficht Ram, or optimax oil. They are designed for low carbon and use synthetic stocks.

Al;
Thanks that is some encouraging news. I will find out once we have ice out. I sure hope this takes care of this problem. I really like the motor when running good. any recommendation on plugs, prop and rpm's?
You should be happy with your new power head. I have a 1998 175 Ficht on my 1800 pro V and had the Power head replaced in the fall of 99 and have not even fouled one set of plugs in this new power head. Befor I would go through a set of plugs in about 10 hours of running time.It has run like a champ since they swaped it out and I have not had any kind of problems since.Good luck and good fishing.
