Just a word to our fellow fisherpeople a teenager died of hypothermia as a result of a sled he was on going through the ice on Rainy Lake out by Fort Frances. You can never be too safe. There are lots of safety rules for safe sledding. Maybe we can list a few so this tragic incident can be learned from. Lets hear some of your"safe sledding rules".

1) Never go joy riding when you have low visibility. This means Fog, Freezing rain on your face shield, Dirty headlamp at night. ect..
2) Never go places you have never been before, without taking complete caution.
3) Stay the heck away from rivers, inlets, outlets, river channels on early ice ect...
4) Avoid riding alone if possible. It's more fun with others and it may save your life sometime!
5) Alcohol and snowmobiles are a DEADLY combination!

Stay clear of Dams and drains on rivers.
Road salt will eat away ice near bridges and street drains so use extream caution.
River ice is NEVER safe!

Turns out the teenagers were out of Kenora, and were on Lake of the Woods. Sad story, one died and one is being treated for frostbite.

We got the story while at the lake. There was another death in the Fort Frances area where a sledder hit a fence buried in the snow. The boys got them confused. Thanks for clearing up the details.
