I have a close friend who's mother died about 2 years ago. She left him and his father some inheritance and they used it to buy a place on Big Chetek, Wi. this past summer. They knew that mom would want them to spend the money on something that the family could share and that would give the family reason to do things together. He is a beginner fisherman and he has 1 son and another on the way. He had me up this winter ice fishing and we were able to find some nice perch. I was able to clean a few and send them home with him to share with his family. What I would realy like to do is be able to go up there this spring/summer and turn him on to some walleyes and smallies. Anyone have any experience on this lake? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

There is Chetek, near the city of Chetek, or Chetac, which I believe you are interested in. The latter is just east of Birchwood on 48 or F or depending which side you go up.

It is not a really great walleye lake but in spring the east shore where Knutson creek enters in it can get interesting for walleyes and real early on as water begins to warm for large crappie. This is just east of the islands. Also fishing the channel between the islands and around them is productive as is the west side north of the narrows.

The lake is better known for bass, crappie, bluegills and of course slime bearing northern, most are snakes although good ones are caught. The north end is very good for both northerns and bass in the stumpy area north of ChitChat. Other choice areas are the narrows where squaw creek comes in, or motor under F to Birch lake which has a better population of walleye (supposedly). Fish the narrows on the way w/crankbaits.

For whatever reason, come midsummer you can just about walk on the lake. It gets quite green. Perch tend to get questionable for consumption also.

We have spent many enjoyable years on Chetac altho we now spend more time in Stone Lake/Hayward area. If you want to trailer at all the Red Cedar just south of Birchwood is a good choice for walleye as is Long Lake (on D west of Birchwood.

Good luck.

Minnesota, if you're going to get to Red Cedar as suggested by TLY e-mail me at XCTYCoach@AOL.com. I've been fishing that lake for years.
