This year's mayfly emergence has not begun yet (June 6) to any appreciable degree. I've seen a couple of postings to date reporting mayflies, but daily examinations of lakeshore spots around Port Clinton have shown none. Take note that we are right now seeing an emergence of a large midge (Chironominae), commonly known as muffleheads. These midges occasionally are confused with mayfies (muffleheads look like huge mosquitos with fuzzy antennae).
A northeaster has fishing a bit subdued today, but quality should continue improving over the next couple of weeks. Mayflies should begin to appear over the next week to 10 days, peak in late June or early July, and continue emerging in smaller numbers through early August. Anglers last year seemed less affected overall by the mayfly emergence, casting tiny spinner riges and trolling small spoons with success.
