What is your definition of silver-fish? Almost all fish are good
depending on the chef that cooks them

If you are referring to what is more commonly known as white bass, then they are OK. Not as good as W's, but not too bad. The big key is to get them on ice right away for best flavor.

I think he is talking about the fish that will bite when nothing else is bitting the fresh water drum aka sheephead.
And if you ice em down as your catching em, then clean em as soon as your done fishing you should be ok.:-)

Thanks for the information. No I do not mean sheephead. They might be called white bass somewhere else but here around Windsor they are silver in colour and look like a big white perch. Most of them are about a pound or so.....some a little bigger. They fight good. I have just never ate any and wanted to know how they are from people who eat them. They are going crazy in the Detroit River. This is a regular thing at this time of year. Some are still carring eggs. They must be river spawners. You only get them in Lake Erie in the summer around here and once in a while in Lake St. Clair

Yes, white bass and silver bass are different.

I caught a bunch and gave them to a fellow at work who loves them. I think they taste a little fishy. I figure why bother when I have enuff perch and walleye already.
Just try a few. They arent bony or anything. You might like them. Whats to lose?

If they are "White Bass" place all keepers in a iced cooler until cleaning. Fillet fish and remove the dark red lateral line with a shallow v cut or simply cut fillet into only white meat pieces. Do this before packaging for freezer. The lateral line in White Bass gives it the "funny taste".

After learning this tip we now target "white Bass" rather than crappie when possible. The flesh is firmer and the fishing action when you get into a school of "White Bass" is fast and furious.

Ate my silver bass for supper and they were great. I soaked them all night in milk to take out the strong taste and fried them along with the walleye. The bass were gone BEFORE the walleye. I will not hesitate to cook them again. Give them a try.....you will not be sorry.

Jigs they are called White Bass here on Erie. They are spawning heavy right now and are good to eat IF you put them on ice and eat them right away.(before freezing) I would not freeze any. Best if eatin same day or next. The meat will get mushy if you don't ice em or soak em to long. Soaking in buttermilk doesn't hurt either
