I just bought a 9.9 kicker for my 17ft boat,the main motor is a60hp.
on our first and only outing so far with the new kicker,we found out that trailoring with it can be VERY nerve wracking. I'm wondering if we are allowed to use the main motor to trailor with or would we get fined on the lower hp lakes.
What does everybody else do?

I have the same type of problem on small HP lakes. what i do is take my time and not expect the kicker to get it up on there. get a pair of hip boots or a pair of shorts and get in the water like we all have to do. that's what the guys with the small boats and motors do. the linesville stumps ramp really sucks. way to steep for even 16 ft boats with kickers. hope this helps. i use a 9.9 for my main motor...so im always out there standing on the tongue, i have not got wet so far but it's still a pain in the #####....if i had a larger hp.....i would take a good look around for the warden....and run that boat right up the trailer....no harm done...it's not like your water skiing!

I went to Gander Mt. and bought a $15 pair of hip boats. I keep them in the boat at all times and toss them in the truck when I launch. I don't have to balance on the trailer, just wade in and pull the boat up. It is illegal to use your big motor, even just to load.

Try this. Have your partner back your trailer in to the normal depth you would load withthe big motor and drive on. When you are on the bunks squarely, use a hand signal for him to back up a foot then ease up the bunks. Repeat until you are the whole way on, Hook up the eye and pull out. It will take a few trials to get good at this but when you get the teamwork down you will be suprised how quick you can pull out with the kicker. If you are by yourself then hip boots it is. Hope this helps, Rich
