Thinking of coming over this weekend. Reports look good. I was wondering at what stage the mayfly hatch is in. What is the likelyhood it will be in full force this weekend?

Hasn't even started yet on Lake St. Clair. Water is still too cold. Not a factor for fishing this weekend.

With these warm days it kicked it into gear a liitle. Some are flying around but not in full force. This was the lorain area.
Good Luck!!

I spent most of last weekend on the Lake in Monroe. I saw about a dozen of them on Friday night. None since then. Wouldn't be suprised if they start rolling in by the w/e.

Tim,
Have you seen the actual large Mayflies, some people call them Canadian soldiers, or are you referring to the midges ??? We dock in Lorain and seen our share of midges but I have yet to see a Mayfly.

What affect does the mayfly hatch have on the walleye and perch fishing?

I live right by metzger marsh on the lake and I have seen very few as of yet. I fished last night until 9:30pm and didnt see any to speak of.

They pig out on the hatch and it's hard to get them to bite on anything else, the trick is to "MATCH THE HATCH" use baits that resemble a mayfly, small hammered gold spinners work well.

Don't be afraid to fish when the mayflies hatch, thats just an excuse for not catching any. I think it actually triggers them to feed on anything you can get to look like a mayfly, small gold or copper spinners. Fish can be at any depth too.
