What a great area to fish for our favorite fish. I've be the only one on the water, practically, and find fish, easily. The Beaver is a different story. It get's regular pounding, and many people fish it,from shore. The Walleye run to a respectable size,I've seen 8lbs and a 13 or so came from the water near 3 Rivers at the city.I see so many report's from all over, the west the north, and this river can hold it's own. Alot of fish seem to be a sucker for the troll.Rapala's do well.Wally Divers, are #1. The quick flash, and action it's got is great.Catch walleye on the first troll, almost everytime here,no bull.Dating back to the early 80's the Bomber was hot,now it's changed,a little.Give it a try,it'll not disappoint. Good launches, sand bottoms and rock, and no shortage of it.

Lund Angler MJ, Do you put in on the southside? I'd like to try this area! Live just outside of Monroeville, love to catch the eye's. Throw me more info and I'll post my report by the end of the week.
Spend the winters fishing HP dam, hoping to find a new summer spot. Thanks in advance!

Well 90% of the time I put in at Ambridge,Leetsdale access,on the Ohio and the Fish Comm launch on the Beaver. There's alot of good fishin' at the Dashields dam.The area downstream, just near the end of the riprap, are some rocks and drops underwater that hold fish.Goes from 15' on top to 27' or so,and fish get a good break from current there. I do good on my "up-stream-drag" a method of moving upstream trolling, and going just fast enough to move against the current.A nice slow method, and fish see the bait, have a chance to react and as you move upstream, they hit. It's really effective.Try Husky Jerks or a weighted minnow bait of some kind. There's some good fishin on the Allegheny River too. I hear the dam just up from where the Turnpike crosses it is good. I've only been there once. Not enough time to comment.Another place to go is the Beaver River.Fish up near the dam. It's all pretty shallow, but it hold's fish like a magnet.People just get used to traveling to other lake's,and leave the rivers alone. As it warms the people do come back. The Ohio has alot of #'s of 16" fish and at night use your life-vest,and go for bigger one's.

Wow. I didn't realize there were so many WC'ers that fished the three rivers around Pitsburgh. I like the Leetsdale pool too. The launch is decent, though it's been a couple years since I used it. At that time I thought the state could afford to spend a little more on the dock there. It was a bit of a chalenge to launch with family members who couldn't help much. I've caught a few walleye there but have to admit I usually fished to pool for smallies, as at one time I was a Bass fisherman. There I admitted it... I was a Bass fisherman.. LOL
Maybe we should plan a 3 rivers WC get-together?
Good fishing.

Sure, let's do a 3-Rivers get together, and fish that Leetsdale/Dashields pool. It's got some fish. I too,was a Bass-Azz fisher-man. Now I enjoy the skill that fishing can empart on one's life.Hey,with the local interest, let's do a day, that guy's can meet and see what we can all put up. This pool is good, and I hear that other fishing in this area is also hot.Namely, the Allegheny.I've seen in the In-Fisherman,Walleye of 10,12 and more coming from the river. It's mostly a cold water bite, but hey;fall's just around the bend. The bend's are a key too.By the way,a recent 13# came from the point area.Wow!!I wanted to pass along another spot I know,it's a beautiful eddy, conected to the dam. The water goes back towards the dam,on the Ambridge side. It's been the spot to hit as the water get's high. This river can be down right dangerous, and don't venture out if it's too high.Use you're good judgement.Go off the shoreline,if it's too high.My best,is simply when the river's at a nice calm pool. That's good for safety's sake.Roy-Earnest-Tom let's keep in touch. I'm in Beaver Co.,about 5 min. from the Beaver Riv.I've got to get that e-mail stuff down, and share more for us all to enjoy.

I am from Imperial, PA near the Pittsburgh International Airport. I've met Tom and Ernest at HPD this past winter. Tom showed me the way at HPD. We caught boat loads of Sauger, Saugeye and Walleye including a 6 pounder, the biggest I've ever caught. I am very interested in learning to fish local rivers better. I have only ever launched at Leetsdale or 13th st. Sharpsburg. I am well equipped for trolling with lead core, snap weights, bottom bouncers, in line planer boards, etc. I need someone with more experience to teach me seasonal fishing hot spots, the effects of water level on fish locations, and help to refine my trolling techniques. I would be interested in organizing several outings together this summer to see how other locals fish the rivers.

With the clarity of water on the Ohio,or the lack of it, I've alway's done fine on long line trolling.Never had to resort to dipsys,or boards. They may hold an untapped method,to even more walleye here. The river's high now,but as it comes down, they'll hit.My friend uses blade baits, almost exclusively there, and does quite well. Many method's work,so don't be shy about experimenting on the Big "O".As far as effect's the water level has on them,I think they still move to certain spots to feed, and just get breaks,on the bottom, which by the way has much reduced flow, directly on the bottom. The surface may be rolling, but the bottom can be calm.Like the wind,at the surface,it's calm.At 2000 ft,well,35mph winds may be gusting away.Resistence, friction with the bottom. Hey,what's HPD? A lake near Pgh?
L.A.
hpd is the highland park dam, the place i turned quite a few guys on to this winter who i might add had some real success, i,ve been fishing leetsdale for 20 years now along with the back channel up river some, have caught and released some huge eyes and sauger there, leetsdsale is an awsome winter spot to fish from shore big eyes and lots of them, i,m up for this get togather when the details are worked out, talk to ya later.

Thank's,Tom,I wondered what Hpd meant. It's funny, the fish,at least big Walleye move out of the dam area, and go downstream to main river spot's. I've gotta locate them now in warmer condition's. I've found some deep pool's, and they do stack up there.Tom,where do you live? You sound alot like someone I know.Is your wife's name Patty? If not,I just thought so many thing's you described, sound like my friend from Hopewell. That's where I'm from.Live in Aliquippa.(Center Twp.)Saturday's seem to be a good day for me to get together, and go fishin',anybody else ok with that?Friday's also work for me.Let's see where we stand on this.I'd love to have a friendly outing, meet some new anglers, and see some faces to go with the names.Maybe later in the summer,we could get something together for Chautauqua,a good Walleye lake.Just a thought.Meet up with Sluggo,Gilligan, and others.Heck,we could start our own club.Names, anyone?? lol.
my wifes name is cindy, i,m from cecil in wash county, not far from ya, born in Pittsburgh ( southside ) and lived in bloomfield than carnegie and finally moved to cecil, i,ll be moving up to the pymytuning area as soon as our bussiness sells and than our house, that will put me a lot closer to my beloved lake erie, man i can,t wait.

Hey Guys! I read the posts on this site daily (have been for a few years now) and have posted a few things about the Allegheny River and Lake Chautauqua in New York. With the amount of walleye and sauger fishermen on the Three Rivers + the Beaver, you would think that someone would take the bull by the horns and at least think about starting a walleye fishing club in the area. I'm from Springdale and fish the Allegheny from HPD to Lock 9 on the Allegheny. Mainly, I throw jigs and pull harnesses and Lindy Rigs. I'd be willing to meet with a couple of you hard nosed eye bangers (might be a good name for the club....Three Rivers Eye Bangers) to discuss the idea. Just a thought, there are enough experts on river fishing in our area that we may someday see Al Lindner and his camera crew on the Allegheny. Well, what do you think?

At the Pgh. outdoor show,at the Expo Mart,I met Dave Csanda, and he said Al's all but done. Retired, that is. He got the old change-up,when Primedia took the rains. He doesn't appear so much anymore, and I've seen the difference too.I was going over some old book's I've got,and saw what they're missing. They had a great thing in Al,and as they say, seeing is beliveing. A segment with Dan Sura,he takes a second to lean over to the camera and say, with all seriousness, " Fishin' behind that guy can make for a long day",as Al nabbed another Bass. That's it catching 'em like the water's on fire.Running from a burning building with a baby in his arm's.That's Al.I've recorded some of the old show's and his Walleye tip's,from slip-bobber's at night to lindy-riggin' the drop off in fall all work.No bull there, just some fish catching ability.Anyway the fishin' around here is good, and at the outdoor show I met some people with Western- Pa- anglers.Check'em out. That's the web site.Joined and got into some tourney fishing.Local that is.Next outing is Presque Isle,Lake Erie. July 6-7th.Then Chautauqua, the 13-14th. The first day's are Bass.Second Walleye.Maybe we can get some more "Walleye" days.Check out the site, right me back, guy's.

Ive been fishing the Beaver river for the last 6 or 7 years and there is lots of walley in there. In the early spring you can catch some Big ones. I use a trolling method of an imatation hot n tot and troll up stream mostly trying to stay in the 4 - 6 ft. range on a shot line and letting the current do most of the action on the lure. If you dont lose 5 or 6 lures a day you aint catching fish and mid day is sometimes the best time to catch em. I move to the Ohio about end of July and fish deep. Hope it helps someone. Good Luck.

Dazed:
What methods do you use to catch those deep eyes in the Ohio in the Leetsdale Pool?

Roy,I'll take a stab at this. Deep is a relative term,20' to 25' or so is deep, here. I've seen some deeper, but it's a wash=out hole, near the dam,and not really holding fish. Trolling get's to them in an upstream manner, with a crank,or even a minnow bait. Too much current bring's the bait up,but just the right troll, get's you in the park.Jig-n-minnow,is a close 2nd,for nailing these baby's.Look for the rolling dunes,as I call them, spots that are a hole followed by a rise in the bottom. Seem's to hold fish,in high water times, and on sunny day's seem to be a good spot,to drift,as the dark water here, doesn't seem to shut them down, like a lake does.Good luck!
