PORT CLINTON, Ohio (Reuters) -- Three ice fishermen drowned in Lake Erie 10 miles off the Ohio shoreline apparently after losing their way and driving an all-terrain vehicle into open water, police said Wednesday.

The three bodies were recovered after the accident Tuesday in near-freezing waters off Middle Bass Island, the Ottawa County Sheriff's office said. A spokesman said fog and blinding snow may have caused the trio to become disoriented.

The victims were believed to have perished soon after they plunged into the sub-freezing water. The accident was discovered when a cooler was spotted bobbing on the water near the scene.

The dead were identified as Howard Taylor, 73, and Robert Shammo, 65, both of Shreve, Ohio, and Stanley Puster, 60, of Lakeville, Ohio.
