I don't know about anybody else, but doesn't that message at the top of the board sound a bit creepy? "Registration is optional. I have your IP address. I CAN find you. You are not invisible here."

I understand what he's saying, but it comes across as a very grave warning. I'd wonder what it was about and possibly get a wrong impression if I was a first timer on the board.

Creepy? I don't think so. I don't know about the rest of you people but I'm sick and tired of all the bashing, name calling etc.. because people think they are invisible.

If that message scares someone away, they don't belong here.

If you post here, I know when, where, what time, which ISP and from there I can find out who did it. Nothing new. I've had this capability since I put this board online. Seems like I'm the only one that knew that. Thought I'd share that information with the rest of the group.

If a person has nothing to hide, there are no problems. If a person thinks they can come here, bash, degrade and cause problems because he's invisible. He's wrong. Just thought I'd let everyone know that.

Registration is optional, but it does offer capabilties above and beyond those that are not registered. Like editing a message after it's posted and more.

But, I have your IP address. I CAN find you. You are not invisible here.

If you have a problem with that, I'm sorry. It's not going to change.

My experience from other message boards tells me that if you are not a computer nitwit like me and don't want to be found those are hollow words indeed. I hope some cyberpunk with an attitude doesn't take up the challenge because Scott will be busy. Hackers and bombers can defeat URL's with impunity. I'm suprised there isn't more garbage on here. I think it says a lot about how great this community is.... JC

If you think the people who run this are overstepping their bounds for 'knowing' who you are, then leave. I've run several (and still do) semi-public servers, and there is always atleast one person in the crowd who takes it upon themselves to make it be something it was never meant to be. I'm not saying that person is wrong, and I'm not saying the people running the show are right. What I am saying is, if you don't like something don't do it.

If Golden having your IP address is more than you can handle quit typing in the URL to WC. I've got bad news for you tho, EVERY web site you go to, if the people that run it are the least bit interested, they can get your IP address. If you don't know what an IP is, forget it. If you do know what one is, then you know you can traceroute it, find the ISP, and email ABUSE@whoever.isp...

I would dare everyone here to read their "Terms of Service" agreement with their ISP. I GUARANTEE you will loose this argument with your ISP.

Now lets quit bickering and talk about fishing, I've been on the site less than 5 minutes tonight and already I've refrained from posting on the first 'bickering' I saw... This one I just couldn't pass up. Nothing personal, I'm just trying to give everyone here a un-bias perspective.

Creepy, I dont think so.
And I personally belive it will improve the behavior of the board if we can make it stick.

Use the "alert" feature, let's help this guy out.

I'm all for a forum that cares, I appreciate it.

I am with Scott 100%!

This is still the best fishing site on the net with no exception. Some day if I ever meet Scott I will go shake his hand and personally commend him on what he has done. There are so many good things going on here that outweigh the few stupid idiots that want to use this place for the punching bag 20:1. It is easy to see through the ones who like to post negative things just to play "I and mine is better than yours". We can disagree, credit our favorite products and items without having to discredit and bash others. There is a fine line between constructive criticism and bashing which seems to be each's individuals perspective. Constructive criticism is always helpful if taken in the correct text, no need to ever get personal. Name calling is useless. Disagreements lead to great discussions if done tastefully.

Thanks Scott and keep up the good work!

creepy...nah...lots of kids like to play (hope they
are kids anyway)...might discourage...

basically a pc moron myself...ridin wave of modern
technology...i was under impression that ip address
pointed to internet service provider...and address
changes every time you attach to provider...at least
last few digits anyway...the larger your provider
the more radical the change...not sure what
AOL(for example)would do with request for identity
tied to user...taking for granted that they could
tie address to particular user at certain time...i
would think provider had some type of log...
am i wrong.????????

A lot of people think the internet is anonymous. It's not.

I'm an admin for a large company, and I still find it amazing how many people are totally shocked when I tell them how many things we log. I spend a good part of my day going through log files, checking up on what people are doing to make sure they're not getting in trouble. Everything is logged, There are very few things that a person can do on the internet that are not tracked. Like Scott said, you can't hide.

There are some very talented hackers out there, but they're not the problem. Most of the hackers that cause damage are stupid 14 year old kids that found some cool script that they can run. They don't know crap, they just like being a pain in the butt. They're called script kiddies, and they almost always get caught if they're persued.

Hiding on the internet is difficult, even for the best, that's why big hacks are rare. A person has to either be really good, or really stupid to even try.

Let's get rid of this ice and go fishing, eh?

I visit several other fishing sites and always notice more bashing, *****ing, and other non informational threads during the long winter months. We all have cabin fever, some of us channel our aggressions, others don't. We all have to think before we start some of these confrontations. There seems to be some carry over feuds from past threads that enter into the fray. Walleye Central provides a great form for all to share info and thoughts on our favorite subject, let's not abuse this gift and do away with all the BS. Hope the soft water season comes quick, we all need it.

Good luck, Murph!

Marcb_loser,

I have had the displeasure of investigating many complaints that have stemmed from the net.........from suicide threats to fraud.

Whether you are using AOL or a small guy like me (Mercury Network in Michigan)you are being monitored and unless you are very talented, most everything your fingers type can be retrieved.

Be careful and if it's important and confidential choose another mode.

When ever you are on the internet everything you do is recorded somewhere about 10 times. We all have IP addresses thats like wearing a GPS tracker on your forehead. Scott has a tough job I'm sure he doesn't like to ban anyone but at times he has no choice but to drop the hammer.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, Scott! Keep up the good work and keep the 99% who are rational and reasonable on the straight and narrow. This site is provided free of charge to the users and the abuse gets (sometimes)to be too much!

I applaud your work and look forward to being able to visit this room on a regular basis without feeling like I have to be on my guard everytime I post.

Keep it logical, keep it rational and let's all have an exchange of ideas that helps... not hinders... the pursuit of our favorite fish.

Maybe someone who doesn't know Scott would take that comment as being a little creepy but I took it to mean that he's just had enough of the nonsense that's been going on. All Scott wants is for people to be nice and have some respect for each other. I don't think that's asking for much... As far as the, "I CAN find you," thing goes, he's welcome to come visit me any time. I can't think of a nicer person to have drop in... :-) I'd drag him and Cindy around to some of my favorite lakes.

It's all about accountability, if you think being personally responsibility for your actions is harassment than maybe it is creepy to some?

Scott, Zack, and the crew do a outstanding job here and should not need to play Mom, Dad or big brother to some people, but there are the rare few who go too far and become abusive to others, or offensive to all, most do of us do not.

Keep up the good work!

There! It's been said - ACCOUNTABILITY! Thank you, Ed. If you ain't about to take responsibility for your words or actions, you have NO PLACE being here!

Remember - this board is OWNED by Scott he is not singularily an "administrator" he "OWNS THE BOARD"!! His playground, his ball and bat and his rules - PERIOD! And I truly appreciate him allowing us to play here! Best fishing board anywhere!

Right on Ranger! This is a great site. It provides for a lot of interesting reading. A great place to find the answers to a lot of fishing related news and info. We will not always agree on all of the issues. That is what makes it so valuable. The key is to value the views of others. Thats what makes for the great learning experience. There is no reason for name calling or bashing. I think that most all of us share at least one common thread. Most all of us want to see good conversation relating to the activity we like most. Fishing. Take Care. TM

I posted a negative comment once, and within an hour there came a knock at the door. There stood Golden, Zach, Juls, TBO, ETT, NoFish, and a few overweight fellows whom I didn't recognize.

My knees are feeling better now, and I'm getting pretty good with this wheel chair. Doctor says I might even walk again someday. But the worse part was when Juls told me my boat sucked and that only wimps had tin boats. ETT told me all my rods and reels were garbage--that I might as well use a Snoopy combo. And NoFish dumped all my tackle out laughing at my dull hooks, out-of-tune lures, and wrong colors. TBO spat on my carp mount, Zach laughed in my face, criticizing me for not being able to recant the triangulation method to determine running depths of trolled baits (he said I brought shame to Pythagoras). All the while Golden stood there, motionless, giving me a look that hurt worse than my knees. I dropped my head in shame, and the next time I looked up, they were gone.

So you think that warning message is a little creepy? You should! Be afraid. Be very afraid!!!

This is a bit off topic, but if we are discussing sites and capabilities...is it true there is a set of regs coming out for all websites regarding the Americans with Disabilities Acts? I've heard all kinds of things from rolling banners to strange signs for point and clicks. I don't profess to be an expert. It's just chit chat I heard at work.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-01 AT 00:41AM (CST)[p]OOPS, hit the wrong button and erased your reply River Eye, must be a habit to hit the "delete" sorry 'bout that one.

I agree with you, it's a "foreboding" message but I have to do something, if anyone has a better idea short of requiring a password let me know. I will not make this a register only board because I believe that will take away from the value.

Anyway, sorry for the quick fingers.. habit I think.

I just get tired of the bickering and slamming people do with the belief they are invisible. I wanted to let them know that was not the case. Maybe if they realize I can find them things will settle down, we'll just have to see.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-01 AT 00:27AM (CST)[p]I'm sorry that you took my post the wrong way, I should have realized how people would respond, these being the winter months, and everybody having cabin fever.

I am very familiar with the capabilities of web site administrators, it doesn't bother me. I have no problem with administrators knowing who I am. I know which users that Scott is threatening but I am not one of them.

I was just commenting specifically on the message and it's wording. Please give me a warning before you jump on my back next time, k?

Maybe creepy was the wrong word. It just struck an strange note with me, although it doesn't
worry me because I consider myself to be very respectful of others on this board.

Like I said, I realize your good intentions, and I have no beef with it, I'm just commenting that I
saw it as an odd statement when I first noticed it.

I'm just wondering if it will make a positive difference at all, I sure hope so, and I guess we'll find
out.
