Just a word of caution. Some guys I know were perch fishing last weekend and got 96 perch. Was only allowed 90. They said it was an honset mistake and it probably was but the DNR didn't give in. It cost $80.00 and some embarrassment. So be very careful on your counts. I have heard they are really going to check & enforce it this year way into the fall. It won't matter if your only one over.

In my opinion, that's not a very big fine. Sure it could have been an honest mistake but there are no excuses for that. If you can't count to 90 without having problems, get yourself a counter to keep in the boat. I keep one attached to my ice fishing bucket as that is the only time I really keep any number of fish. It makes it real simple. At least they got fined something.

Poaching is poaching, whether you mean to or not. The DNR was just doing their job. Good for them.

I agree with the counter idea. We have "his and her's" counters, just so that will never happen to us. Any hardware store, Wal-Mart, etc. will carry them.

I've yet to see a game warden on the lake this year. Where were the folks that got caught?

I totally agree, I have no problem with them getting caught and fined. Was just letting others know that they will not tolerate even one little perch over in case someone thinks they will. Sometimes people think because they are just perch that it won't matter. Dean I believe they were at "Mazuricks" I have seen the DNR on the lake atleast 7 times this year. They came right out and told us at a meeting I was at that they were going to get tough on the perchers this year clear into Dec. if need be. So Lorain & Huron will be target spots this fall.

I haven't been checked but have seen them boarding boats at Round Reef and over near the Turn-A-Round. I agree, the limit is the limit, but I have seen them cut some slack on 1 fish over in a big basket -- 180 - 210 fish (not mine :-)) And, I understand that since I am not perfect and have made some mistakes at times!!

We got checked on the head boat, they boarded the boat and spent 3 hours checking everyone's fish and liscence!!! Pretty funny watching them count 35 peoples buckets of fish!

forget the limit-why did they need more than 5 or 10/person. If you want to stock your freezer w/ fish, go to a grocery store.

Because I can. I love to eat perch. I enjoy a perch dinner more than any other type of fish. The law says I can have 30 perch. Why would I want to pay someone for some perch that were gill netted and sat in someone else's freezer before being set out in a display case, and then take them home only to freeze them again...YUCK!!!!
When I can catch my own and freeze them, I know they are as fresh as can be!

Not to mention that perch from the store is anywhere from 7.99-11.99 a pound, depending on where you shop! I'm not about to support the commercial netters, who do more damage to the systems than anyone, when I can catch my own dinner.

That's a no-brainer, but I also understand your point. But, if you fish Erie at all, you would also know how well the perch population thrives there. I don't see the 30 per person limit as a threat to the population. If it becomes a threat, I'm sure the DNR will change the rules before there is damage, and I will be the first to abide by the new limit.

I admit, I wouldn't have this attitude if I were fishing any other body of water. I've never seen schools of perch like Erie's anywhere else.

And don't forget that the perch fishermen along with other sportspersons are the sorce of the money that turned lake erie from a "dead lake" to the productive fisherie that it is today.Lets have a little respect for the ones who paid the bill.

grocery stores should not sell sport fish in their stores.they do'nt pay in any monies for the fish culture, they should be boycoted.how about a 30 fish limit on the netters? Can anyone catch 30 perch in lake erie and sell them??

I'm not sure who paid the majority of the bill for all the sewage treatment plants on Erie's watersheds, but whoever, they get a big thank you from me!

Thanks for the reminder airwave! It doesn't take much to get lax with the count when several guys are along and having a good time.

No you cannot sell fish unless you have a license.
