Wanted to fish this afternoon on limited time, fished 15 mins from home at berlin lake, lived here all my life and never liked the lake, still dont, I know fishing lately has been slow at out inland lakes but this lake stinks all year round, it's my opinion that berlin is a lake that the jetskiers can have, was I annoyed by the jetskies....NO...I expected it, I realize that some peoples hobby is to speed and get wet , to each his own I guess ...never again for me....never! skunked on fish at berlin for the last time , next time I will blow the extra $50 and head for pymatuning

JVolpe,
Dont give up on Berlin. It's a hard lake to learn, especially the way they flucuate the water levels.Right now the lake is 10' down and really hard to fish. This lake seldom gives you numbers, but the ones you get will be really be nice.
Went there Aug.12,I wanted to fish, didnt want to go far and decided to hit Berlin.(I live in Austintown) Launched at daybreak and caught my first eye at 7:15,a 23 incher.Picked up three more and was home by 11:30.
Fish deeper water(20-23')use leadcore, and firetiger hot-n-tots. I know you dont like leadcore, but sometimes you have to change.Spend some time there and the lake will surprise you.

jvolpe.......dinky knows his stuff. i have talked with him numerous times and he has taught me alot. has a pretty good record as both a charter captain and a walleye tournament fisherman. he has traveled to all the big puddles and knows his way aroung with old marble eyes. if you get a chance, stop in at gander mountain and talk to him. by the way, i really appreciate all your encouragements at work friday. really hope to stay on as there are so many good folks there. say a prayer for me. i will get over to p15 this week and give you a couple of spots to hit in the fall. once again, thanks for everything.............rap

dinky, I lived in A-TOWN for 20 years.....birch trace, Canfield the for the last 10....I gotta say...I dont hate leadcore...I use it on erie...I hate using leadcore in a lake with an average depth of 14 ft (pym) and is loaded with stumps! I had a few good trips to berlin, I caught crappie, alot of them , in the bay near les's bait...but the fish were small....all the walleye I ever caught were small and few, Other than that I have never had any luck on berlin or milton, I have had some BIG fish from mosquito , and some great trips, put im in love with pym, after all the years of trying berlin it's etched in my brain that the fishing stinks....i guess your right..I wont give up..it is awfully close...and RAP...i was in your shoes...and it worked out...and after it worked out...I watched 4 or 5 more groups after me in the same boat as you...each time everyone made out OK ....it may not be immediately...but it will happen, they will have no choice, and whom better for the job than someone who does not need to test/train/break in .....they want someone who will show up the first day and fall in....seen this many times...no sweat...see you next week.

Jvolpe,
I dont fish Berlin on a regular basis but do fish it about 5 times a year when our walleye club has a tourney there.I can tell you this about it,,,,9 times outta 10 your gonna be real frustrated!Yea when you do finally catch a fish it mite be decent but in my opinion its not worth the hassle.Personally id never fish the lake if we didnt have tourneys there.Yes and i fish leadcore ALOT,,,,this lake seems to have most everyone stumped,,,jig fisherman as well as trollers.Save your sanity and go to Mosquito or Pymatuning if you wanna catch walleyes onm a regular basis.Just my humble opinion.TightLines,Kdog(KeithWalters)

I just rode past Berlin lake on my way back from the kids football game in Alliance. I might not have passed over the main part of the lake, but it looks like somebody just drained it!

tmk.....this happens every year at berlin. this lake is operated by the corps of engineers and they draw the lake down in late summer and fall in anticipation of the snow and rain run off of winter and spring. at least, this is what i have always been told. if you think it is low now, take a gander come winter. we use to walk down huge hills to ice fish that during normal summer pool are well under water. i have not fished this lake since the mid 70s but i have been told that at one time it was an excellent walleye fishery. myself, i never did that well. we used to go downstream to milton and did much better. i, like many others, now call pymatuning my second home. by the way, went across the causeway at pym late this afternoon and only saw a couple of boats out. talked to some friends who are regulars and they have told me that they are marking many fish but are catching few. one friend went so far as to take his boat back home for the year. have a feeling that things will get better soon..............tight lines, gents. will talk to you all next sunday or monday.

I too become frustrated with Berlin. I fish there April and May and don't go back once the Bedell ramp is open. Too many knuckleheads then. But be aware, by the end of September, when the lake is low and you think you can't fish any more, the regulars start fishing it again. I think it is the best Fall lake around (except Erie). I have caught more BIG fall walleyes there than any other inland lake (numbers too). The last several years, we fished into December and you could not beat the experience, no speedboats and lots of fish. Once the nights start getting cold, that is where I will be.

Try any rocky or sandy shoreline (This time of year, almost any shore in main lake between Rt 224 and Rt 14 bridge. Around RR bridge is tops). Best shore areas are close to deep water but not always. The absolute best bait for fall walleye as well as large crappie is a VIB-E. Do not use a Heddon Sonar or a Cicada. The action seem different. The smallest, about a 3/16th oz in either silver or gold. One or the other depending on the day. If windy, go to a 1/4 oz but you will seldom need heavier. The lighter ones seem to fall slower. Cast to shore and snap back in small hops about 8 to 12 inches, they usually inhale on the fall back to bottom. Also, fireline seems to give you an advantage because of better feel. It take a while to get the feel of the VIB-E's being sucked in, but keep at it. Any time the last 2 weeks of Sept or anytime in Oct or Nov. You will be happy youy tried. If you can keep the VIB-E away from huge crappies, you will catch your share of walleyes. Have better luck late afternoon and evening, mornings not so good. Good luck.

Hey guys despite my frustration with Berlin looks like this big fish theory is true.My club had a tourney there last Sat and the winning weight for 5 fish was a whopping 21lbs!!!!!! Now the biggest weight our club has ever seen for 5 fish has been around 13lbs prior to this tourney at Berlin,,,,and that has been for the last 4 years. The winner had a #7,#6 #4 and a couple #2 lb fish.Good job Dale i bet you thought you were at Erie.Well there it is fellas,TightLines,Kdog(KeithWalters)

hmmmmmm i think i might have to give this berlin a shot, i know a few fellas who fish it and do ok they only live a few minutes from it but they still go out of their way to get to pymy they just like the #s and being able to catch fish on a more consistant basis, i have to tell ya that after the past to fall seasons at pymy its gonna be hard to drag my butt away, but than again the fall river bite is just around the corner, what to do what to do, cause last winter on the river we had some awsome times.
