View Full Version : FHS map question
Just bought the map for Lake Kabetogama and have some questions on the boat lanes and bouy system used on the lakes. Some of the bouys are desiganted "N", some are designated "C". All seem to have numbers but the numbers don't seem to coincided with miles or other distances. Are the numbers actually on the Cans?Any help anyone can give me on this marking system will be appreciated. Any significance between the green cans and the red cans. Thanks

Hugh,
The buoys on Kabetogama are placed and maintained by the federal government because it lies within a national park, and are there solely as an aid to navigation. There are a few hazards marked.
The numbers have nothing to do with anything except be a reference to where you are on the water, relative to the map. The red/green "can" or "C" is defined as a cylindrical bouy while the red "nun" or "N" bouys are conical.
The numbers happen to go downstream so remember to navigate left of the green bouys. Good luck on the water!

The best way to keep them straight is to remember the Rs -- red, right, returning. Or, red will be on your right as you are returning from sea. In other words, the red is on your right as you go upstream. Obviously, if you are between the buoys and the red is on your left, you are going downstream.
Red-Right-Returning -- simple to remember.

For clarification, the buoys ARE physically numbered. If you are unsure of where you are or if a can sank, you can still tell which numbered buoy goes where on the map by looking at it on the water.
PS, slot limits are RIGOURSLY enforced, but its working very well as eye numbers are much improved.
