I want to use a mono backing on my line counters. What is the best method for connecting the mono backing to my 10lb fireline? I have used small swivels in the past, however I am looking for a better method. Any knot suggestions would be helpful.

UniKnot or Blood Knot.

Ditto. Only way to go.
For the Mono backing to fire line connection - the blood or uniknot works just fine.
However, I have been using the sureons knots for a long time - with no problem. I use the surgeons knot - becuse it is so much quicker to tie. Simply take the two tag ends --i.e. the mono and fireline - tie an over hand knot -- but continue to loop the overhand 5 times. Wet the line and pull tight. it takes about 2 seconds to tie and you are good to go. Don't clip the tag ends too close. Since these are for the mono backer -- as you start to wind on fire line -- hand guide the fire line onto the mono backing to insure that you flatten the tag ends of the line. Once you get two or three wraps on the tag ends they will stay flat and not stick up through your line.

I heard this one at a recent seminar and this was a professional PWT angler talking. He uses rubber bands for backing and then spools up with fireline. Just use one of the two suggestions.
When I spooled up my first time with fireline I didn't know about backing a spool this way and when I ran out of fireline one day and it ended up spinning on me, it cost me a crankbait in the rocks. I don't think I have lost a crank since and I know for a fact if I would have had mono on instead of fireline I would have a lot more cranks on the bottom of the river. Fireline has paid for itself in my boat by bringing back more snagged up cranks than ever.
