Thinking of getting a set of tire chains for Ford Explorer when hills, boat ramps, etc are covered with ice. Am I correct in thinking I should put these chains on rear 2 wheels of 4 x 4? Presume don't need chains on all 4 wheels. Don't have much experience with chains. Know can't drive fast and shouldnt drive on pavement far. Any other common sense suggestions when using tire chains?

Know in mountains, everyone carries a set of chains in winter.

Dave,I have been useing tire chains for many years. The regular "chains" should not be used on radial tires, they tend to break the belts. You should be able to find the cable type chains for radial tires at most any parts store.
As for putting them on the front or rear it all depends. On steep grades where you will need steering control it will not hurt to put them on the front. Just make sure that there are no hoses that could be caught in them when turning. My Father-in-law and I cut alot of wood in the winter time and have chains for all 4 tires mainly for getting into the timber.
Tire chains are a great help but, they are not the "do all fix all" that some people think. You can still loose control on very hard ice.
As for driving on pavement, it is more due to the fact that dry pavement wears the chains more and gives you a very rough ride(ever riddin on a washboard road? :-) ). If you do use chains make sure they are tight and even. It is no fun unwrapping them from around an axle. Been there, done that. :-(
