View Full Version : Huron Walleye

Lake Bound

I am from Centerburg and new to fishing Lake Erie. I would like to go up to Huron and catch some walleye. I have tried twice and haven't had any luck. I have tried slow trolling bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses and some drifting. I have a pair of silver dispy's #1 size and a pair of mini dispys, also some small planar boards, but not sure what to pull and how deep.

I do have a gps so some numbers would be great.

Saturday looks good! I hope to get some good info before I leave late Friday night.

Den is in Vermilion but is a great help to fisherman from Lorain to Sandusky.

It has been a while since I've had any great numbers up there and those came right off the Cranberry Creek Marina just east of Huron. Start shallow unless you hear otherwise from Den. I got some in as shallow as 15 ft. But generally have been picking up a few fish at about the 33-35 ft depth around the 41.27 // 82.27. They have come drifting the gold weapons or my home weight forwards (I think gold was the key though). We caught more trolling I had 0 dipseys back about 100' and confusion colored spoons. The ones that were higher up were caught on reef runners back from 50' to 70'. Best color was the bright green (used to be called eriedescent but I think they called it emerald shiner now). That 27/27 has always given up a couple of fish for me but never huge numbers.
Let me know how you do. I'm hoping to get out this weekend but the boss might have other plans.

Good luck,

Barry

Neither the Eriedescent or the Emerald Shiner are Bright Green. I don't have my cheat sheet handy to tell you what you may have been using.

Lake Bound,
I am from near your area and will be heading up Saturday, also. I will probably start somewhere around the 27/27 to 30/27 lines out of Huron. Most of the eye guys monitor Ch 79 in the Huron area. Give me a call and I'll try to help you out with a program. (Toolman on Ch 79)

We managed four limits yesterday. Nice size walleye, biggest being 28 1/2 inches that weighed 9.7 pounds. Fish all came off the bottom on spoons behind dipsy's. The numbers were 29/22.
I update daily on my fishing report at www.cliftond.com

Nice catch Dean. I'm sure I speak for a lot of anglers when I say "Thanks for relocating to Huron". I really enjoy your daily reports.

The 29/22 lines are more towards vermillion?

Joe,
Yes the 22West line is closer to Vermillion than Huron which is 24N/32W.

There is a map of the area available on Den's Website:

Dean, I heard you on the radio yesterday for the first time. I was fishing the same area that you were. Caught 16 eyes with only me on board. A great day.

What's wierd is the small Scorpion outproduced the bigger spoons for me, and for you it was the opposite. Are you still using the crocodile spoon or something else? I caught most of my fish on 20 jets 60 ft. back on small in-line boards. The high fish were really hitting hard. Maybe I should have run some deep dipsies too. Thanks

Now why would he keep all 16 .Everyone that fishes Erie knows what the limits are.You must just be a trouble maker trying to stir things up.I am suprised we have herd the "Hope you didn`t keep the big ones"
That we start to hear when the Huron bite starts.

Mike I think I saw you, we were crowding into each other and I told you on the radio to go ahead and I would stay away from you.
We were working close to the bottom, hoping for some big ones. I suspect that is why the big spoons and dipsys were working better for me than the small ones. I still run the Krocodiles some but got a bunch of put-togethers from Janns Netcrafters and have been using them as well as some Michigan Stinger in the large size.

Dean, I didn't realize that was you that took a right turn for me. Thanks a lot. We were running paralell to each other for awhile. I bought some of the put-togethers from Jann's, and plan on assembling some tonight to try over the weekend (weather permitting of course).

I am one of the "unfortunates" as you say on your website that still have to work for a living, but occasionally get out on the weekday. Thursday was too nice to pass up, and the fish sure cooperated.

Looks like the weather Gods are going to cooperate Saturday and then mess everything up again for a few days. See you guys on the lake tomorrow. Only three more weeks till the WC get together too... woohoo!

Mike if you would, send me a note at dean@cinci.rr.com and tell me about the size of fish you were getting. Since you were working higher than we were in the same area it could prove interesting.

Dean, that was a good bite that we had out there thursday, i think that all of us that were in the area had a real good load of fish. our biggest was a little over 30 in. that day with a few that were real close to that too. our fish also came lower, and on the bigger spoons too. towards evening after we came in, the fish were higher, and some large eyes were taken in the same area. good luck and good fishin.

After a slow start on Saturday, got into the fish at the 33/23 line. There was an algal bloom on the water, and the surface water in that area was pea green. When you netted a fish, you couldn't see it until it broke the water. The fish went nuts below the algal bloom. They may have been hitting there all day, but I didn't get there until noon.

From 12-4, caught 15 eyes with two 10 lbers. All the fish were nice ones in that area. Best program was the big dipsy 75-90 back on the three setting: big Stingers in either confusion or superman, and the pro king in rasberry.

I was psyched to go back today, but can't make a 14 mile boat run with the forecast for today. For a change, the fishing was so good I WAS there yesterday. With the cold snap coming, let's all hope the days of 14 mile boat runs are over. My boat is lonely for the 27/27 line.

kinda catchy

Mike, fished the same general area as you on Saturday. Interesting that you did well in the bright green water areas. We found most of our fish in the cleaner water. We tried as much as possible to stay out of the bright stuff. After a slow morning things took off in the afternoon for us and we ended up with 21 Walleyes and a couple of fish O's. Never have cleaned fatter fish in my life, might explain why some folks were having truoble getting them going yesterday. Opened the belly up on a ten pounder last night, to our surprise it was empty. Hope this is the start of a good fall. Good luck, Kelly.

Kelly, I caught a few fish in the cleaner water (basically as you got closer to the 22/21 east-west line. My bigger fish, and the two 10 lbers, came under the pea grean water. I was at the far west side of the pack fishing with 4-5 other boats. Good luck to you too.

Nice catch Mike. I'm curious what speed you were trolling? We were working a similar program about 2.2mph in the same area, near 33-34/22. One fish over 10# and several over 5# confusion, superman and kevorkian were good. Didn't get hits in the dark green water like you did. 20 Jets 150 back took a few, 3 on crankbaits. Can't wait to get back out as soon as the weather allows it.

Went to Den's web page and looked up the color. It is 16 Emerald Shiner and if that ain't bright green I don't know what color to call it. Hence the name Emerald Shiner.

Oh Well,

Barry

JBL,I was trolling 1.7-1.9(slower than normal), primarily because I had one one crawler harness when they the fish didn't cooperate in the morning. When the eyes started hitting around noon on spoons, I took off the harness but still trolled below 2.0 on the SOG on my Lowrance 350. I can't wait to get back out either.

Jeff,
Rich said he had to pick it up a little (2.5) to to make it work. That's why we had trouble with his drop lengths.

Thanks a bunch!! Had a great time, and I really appreciate the opportunity.

I may try to get up there with John later in the week, if it sounds worthwhile.

Thanks again, Jim

Dean, sounds like it was one of those days I shouldn't be an "unfortunate." Did you get some hogs too? Nice that the fish stayed active in that area, and glad you had a good day. Mike
