View Full Version : What length St Croix Avid?
I am looking at a medium action St Croix Avid for a jigging rod.
I have found them in a variety of lengths from 5'9" to 6'6". They are annotated for lures 1/8 to 3/8.
What length do you think would be best?
Thanks

The AS63MXF (6'3") makes a real nice jigging rod. I've used this Avid blank on a few custom rods I have built.
I do agree with Bryon that the 6'3" medium x-fast tip rod makes an outstanding jigging rod. It is a nice compromise to cover lots of different situations. If I was only going to have one rod - it would be that rod.
If I were to have more rods in the boat at a time,
I would also have the 5'9" for straight over the boat vertical jigging and for river fishing.
Also, when gowing with deeper jigs - I have found that the 6'6" in the medium action -- with heavier jigs -- gives a better hook set.
Then, if I was going to be throwing only a 1/16th oz jig - I think that I would be using the 6'6" light action rod that came out this year.
So, yes - the 6'3" medium extra fast is outstanding all around jig rod.

I have never had the pleasure of jigging with this rod but it depends what jigging situation you most often fish.I fish the detroit river 90% of the time in ussually 15-55' of water with6-8 mph current, as well, lots of fish classes present. For jigging deep big rivers I use short rods 5'9" or even a bit shorter, must have about 8-10" thin, fast, sesitive tip, then all backbone for hook sets.Usually med/heavey action.I also prefer bait cast reels w/ left hand retrieve and thumb bar release, this allows me to jig 55' deep with currenet and rollers ,on a sand bottom, with lots of quick deepth changes and make adjustments to stay in the strikezone a greater ammount of time.
hope this helps goodluck goodfishin.
