"pym hp changes?"
I guess the issue is up for debate again, I am not the author of this post, I copied it from another discussion board.....> posted on 23-Oct-2002 2:54:34 AM

For those of you who do not read our WCO report I want to inform you of an upcoming meeting on the possible change in horsepower for Pymatuning. It will be held on November 21st at 7pm at the Pymatuning Valley Primary School in Andover, Ohio. It is scheduled to last 2 hours. Ohio state parks, Pa. state parks, Ohio division of watercraft, Ohio division of wildlife, and Pa fish and boat commission should all be there. the topic will be to leave the horsepower as is, move it to 18hp, or move it to 25hp. The subjects of unlimited HP, Jetskis, or waterskiing, are not even on the table, and will not be changed. It has been almost 40 years since it was changed to 10 HP and there is every indication that it will be that long again after this change is made before another one will be implemented. I can assure you that as far as I know no ones mind is made up and they want to know what you want, so please make your opinions heard. My email has changed since I registered for this site it is now fishcop@alltel.net if you cannot make the meeting please email me and I will print them and deliver them to the state park. thanks JOE

jvolpe,
After reading the post that you transferred from the other message board I got to thinking:
Recently, there was a change to a maximum of 18 hp outboards on Lake Arthur , and I haven't seen any problem(s) with the amount of boating traffic on the lake. I can not speak to the amount of traffic and impact that occurs at Pymy, as I have not had an opportunity to get my boat up there, but now that I have a 15 hp outboard I can't fish Pymy unless I use strictly electric. I think if I could add my two cents to the discussion I would opt for a maximum of 25 hp outboards. I originally lived in New York and as such never had to deal with horsepower limitations. I do agree that on impounds there is the potential for erosion due to wake from boats, but I don't feel that a 25 hp outboard is going to create a significant amount of wake to cause serious bank erosion, even if there is high boating traffic on the body of water in question, and a 25 horsepower motor is good enough to get you too your favorite fishing hole without eating up half of the fishing day.
Just my two cents
Thanks

I agree. I live in Akron and I would love to try Pym but, I have a 25 H.P.. I'll bet I would come up at least 5 times/year if I could. I think the question is "where do you draw the line?". No matter what the changes are, the people that are currently fishing the lake are going to oppose them becuase in their eyes it can do nothing but hurt the fishing and the lake. My opinion is to keep the changes reasonable and possibly make it a trial period. I know for a fact that an increase in the H.P. limit would only have a positive impact on the local economy.
This post should have been placed on the General Discussion Board.

The only problem is once you give people a little...they want a lot! That is mainly the reason i see it should stay the same...you have a 25 now...but when its up to 25 people with 50hp engines will start the same thing.
I like the 9.9hp lake...its unique...and a ##### of a fishery...i have a 16' boat that maybe goes 7mph on the lake...sure id like to go a little faster...but id sacrifice that to keep the lake how it is...

the only problem i have with a HP increase is that because of the way the lake is, there are many many stumps that are a few inches under water and lots of sand bars that come up real fast, i went over a sand bar last year and sure enough popped my motor right out of the water, i can only imagine what might have happened if i was going faster, i think you will have a lot more accidents and more equipment damage if you raise the HP over 25, 25 HP isn,t all that bad but if i had my way i wouldn,t go over 18 HP it just won,t be safe.

this issue has lots of opinions...i think i will keep mine to myself!!! I have a pymatuning discussion group at yahoo groups ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pymatuning/ ) most of the members took part in a poll on pymatuning's horsepower, 40% of members who voted elected to keep the lake's horsepower at 10 hp , anyway thats what the majority thinks, soo I am eager to see what happens, anyone interested in taking the poll please visit the group, also..to the original poster, the group has 85 members, any info you posted at the group would be great, alot of the members are concerned with this issue, but most are not local, your up to date info would be more than welcome......please join and vote > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pymatuning/

What the problem is,is the state, and some people stand in the way. What's wrong with a "No Wake" lake.Period.Is it that tuff to decide? Bring in some more folk's to the area, and more local cash.Who think's it will get over-run with people?Does that happen anywhere else?

A no wake lake would be a good idea I think. I fish on some places in NY that have 25 HP limits, but there is also a 5 MPH speed limit. I'm sure alot of 9.9's could throw up a good wake. Unfortunately, people just can't follow the rules and there's always a yoyo to screw things up. Whether it be it a 9.9 roaring close by full throttle or a bigger motor.

25...with a 5hp limit? Now you will have to pay more people to enforce the law. Not only that, but guys who dont have any type of Tach or Speedo in their boat how will they know their speed. how about just leave it at 9.9 and not have to worry.

shoreline erosion is not a valid complaint, a 25 hp wont erode the mudline from my bow...25 hp wont allow watersports to be played, it will allow someone to move swiftly and safely in rough water...any jackass that learns the hard way about stumps and shallow sandbars while horse-playing will deserve it...I think a few bouy's to mark trouble spots, and perhaps a no-wake zone on the entire north end, most people who are begging to keep the hp to 9.9 are wanting to keep the lake and all the fish to their self....i know this becuase I am one of those people...but I hardly think 25 hp will flood the lake with fisherman....it will however....let a few more guys enjoy the lake...and bring some extra income to the good locals who would love the buisness...either way good fishing

You want 25 h.p.but you want a no wake zone on the North end, that makes a lot of sense why increase it at all then if you can't use it,think before you post. LCL

More horsepower means more drunks, more knuckleheads, more pressure, more killed fish, and more zebra mussels. There are several unlimited horse lakes, go there. Many are not in that big a hurry. They are entitled to a few lakes of low or no horse.
With the many big horse lakes there is no reason to create any others.
The gofishohio poll is a little better than 2 to 1 against the horse increase.
I heard that LaDue Res. was being considered for a 25 horse lake. Good grief the place is a mere bird bath. Electric moters are perfectly adequate for small lakes such as LaDue. The pressure on the lakes is intense. The small lakes can't handle much more.
Before Rt.422 was opened all the way to Cleveland, one could go to LaDue and catch 30-50 3/4 to 1 lb. gills a day. That many slab crappies as well. Once Rt. 422 was extended all the way to Cleveland it only took two seasons to make it just another lake. Big gills gone, most big crappies too. These small lakes just can't handle the pressure.
Once the precedent has been set at Pyma. then its just a matter of time before the smaller lakes get saddled with the bigger horses also.
I understand that the next step after a horse increase is going to be an outboard permit. This would explain the states real motives for an increase in outboard usage. If the state needs more money then sell yearly usage permits and fine the litterbugs. I would'nt mind a $100.00 a year statewide lake permit if the money was used for more and stricter law enforcement as well as more stockings.

Jim, and LCL, let's not get started again... with what you two are saying about hp and no wake zone, we should just make it two lakes. North Pymatuning and South Pymatuning. 10 hp north of causeway and 25 south of it. whatever.... I for one would like to leave it as is. I really enjoy getting away from the big motors to relax and fish. also about the zebra mussells, some of us take our small boats to erie, and we could be the ones bringing them back too ! Smitty

Thats not inaccurate about the potential of small boats to bring zebras in from Erie. However the lakes with big horse traffic are allready heavily infested. Just take a look at West Branch for example. It's pathetic and it's been like that for some years. At fall drawdown the place smells like a cannery from the dead mussels left high and dry. Don't have that situation at electric only lakes like Mogadore or Nimisilla.

What's so hard to understand about a no wake lake? You leave no wake from your boat, be it a 2 HP or 25 HP motor. I've be rocked around by many 9.9 HP boats so I don't by that B.S. about being on the lake to relax! I'm sure many people are looking for an opportunity to fish the lake without going out and buying another boat and motor or just a motor. Why don't most of you guys just be honest, and say you want the lake all to yourselves just as it is now. P. S. I'll never fish there as it's too far away from me, but it just galls me when I see some sportsmen trying to screw another. I'm a PA resident, and we are champs at one grop of sportsmen trying to screw another! I spend my recreation time in upstate NY now just because of the attitude of the PA sportsman.

Briefly, it seems as though most of the people against the change are going to have to change their tune a little. Ok, a lot. Now the concern is zebra mussels, drunks, and......... more fishing pressure. Having fished Pymie for only about 15 years, I'm probably not qualified to have an opinion on the future of the lake.

think before i post?....I did.....why would i want it if i cant use it?...to get off the lake faster, to feel better about having some extra kick , to feel more secure taking my family out with a little more hp than 10 , so i have to half throttle when i want to fish the stumps...big deal... ..thanks for breaking your promised silence to reply on one of my posts, instead of adding your civil opinion telling us positives or negatives on the issue...you choose to show that you truly are a b******* , and if by chance the hp is raised to 25 hp...i bet you will see that the north end has major restrictions, just like i said above, any area where someone could get hurt will be clearly marked. a speed limit perhaps...each and every post on this page was a respectable "YA" or "NAY" except yours ...If by chance the hp is changed who wants to meet in front of d&d to do 25 hp donuts? each and every post on this page was a respectable "YA" or "NAY" except yours.............. bad fishing

I oppose a horse increase for reasons Stated in another post. I suspect these hearings are jist window dressing and that the increase will be approved regardless of public opinion. The reason? To increase outboard usage with the intent of taxing outboards. I would prefer a user fee on ALL those who use the lakes and reservoirs. Shorefishers, kayakers, sailboaters, etc. Make the fee substantial and use the money for more and stricter enforcement as well as more stockings. I can't drive but perhaps someone can raise the issue who attends.

I happen to be one of those so called DIRT BAGS don't judge everyone as a dirt bag because your father in law was probably one of them, there is always two sides to every story so until Ihear the other side Iwill ignore your comments. If you like beer cans and trash floating in the lake just let the power boaters on and you will have a dead lake.Ireally feel sorry for you because you don't know anything about this lake.

I've heard enough of this fish hog business, the hitman goes wading 2 to 3 weeks a year he does not own a boat and does very little fishing during the summer months. you all probably catch a lot more fish than he does in a year.I can certainly see why he won't post anymore because a few ruin it for the rest of us. ENOUGH SAID? LCL

JVOLPE If you think 99 per cent of fish caught in this lake are caught on live bait your living in a fantasy world you should stay on the north end and and take some pictures of the stumps.Ihave used leadcore in this lake for 16 years with very good success i don't limit every day but i don't get on this board and tell these guys you get your limit every day on a hook and a minnow almost everyone on this board knows you can't catch the number of fish you claim you catch with your system.Maybe you should take the time to research the leadcore system ,you might even become a better fisherman rather than a photographer.Asfar as meeting you at the dock goes just ask aroundand you'll be told where to find me. good fishing LCL

I have to disagree with Mr. Volpe the north end has been hot for the last 2 weeks the trollers have taken there limits for weeks at a time either trolling hot&tots or small spinner rigs tipped with a half of a crawler.I have personally seem stringers of nice walleys that the amish have caught,i took a picture of a 29 in. walleye today taken in the stumps of the north end.My opinion is to fish the north end in 10 ft. of water trolling tots or spinner rigs.Pictures are available to be seen at the bait shop i run across from birchs landing. This post is being given as an accurate fishing report to help as many fisherman as i can don't be misled to share some of the finest fishing of the year. Good luck to all LCL

I could go on all nite, he is a smart ### , cry baby, always right, trouble makin' , ignorant , incompantent, whiner who has a loud muffler, does not like when people post pictures or give reports , does not like people who use live bait , does not like people who have bigger motors than 9.9 becuase of all the garbage in the lake, ? ? ? , does not want anyone on pym except him becuase he is going to own it someday with all the bait shop money , and if you make him mad he wont post for a long time, and he wont face the fact that the lake will have a new set of horsy laws soon, I DISAGREE with about 99% of everything this guy says becuase I love to hear a ##$$#, get off wc , make everyone happy , let your special lead core hotntot friends visit you in the bait shop, let them meet you in the parking lot at mcdonalds if the shop does go under, just do everyone a favor and trade your computer for some leadcore .

I really hope a moderator leaves that up......h4eheahehahaheh....
Tell you what....you guys take a few days off and then read this thread again and I am sure you will agree it is just plain great...
whew...heehehae.....even w/ the arguing I take in what everyone says about 'their' methods and success, balance it in my head, then toss 99 percent out the window and go fishing where I 'feel it' maaaaan !
And this just popped into my head...what dy'all think about instead of just having an Oh or Pa license, that you buy a 'lake specific' license...?...just a thought....I would like to see some $ thrown into stocking my favorite eye lakes like squito/pymy/ladue....as I'm sure other fellow fishermen would like the same for their favorITE lakes they frequent...hmmm.....
Good luck to you guys and I hope EVERYone keeps posting.

Well, I guess asking how the Musky fishing is , is a waste of time. The response on the Fishing Report board, would conflict with the B******* commentary. I am glad I do my Walleye harvesting on Mosquito!! IF ANYONE CARES, I HOPE PYMY STAYS WITH THE 9.9 limit! It is nice to troll for Muskies and make sharp turns on the points, and not worry about being runover by a person who does not understand the word SAFETY!!

Holy Cow guys !. i am laughing my butt off at 6:30 in the morning here at work....wow that is some great reading...
