I am going to elevenmile this coming sunday wondering if any of you guys were going to be there? I talked to the lady at 11 mile general store she said they did real good last week on slimers any where from 5 to 7 #'s.

I fished Spinney and 11mile before they froze over and did well. I heard of several Bows over 11 lbs before ice up. I was thinking about going this sunday also, but my wife is leaving town for a funeral so I will be Mr. Mom this weekend. Good luck!

Fishguy,
We're going down on sunday as well. Four of us in a Black F250 ex-cab. I also have heard excellent reports from last weekend. Can you tell me what slimers are? Thanks

It is a derogitory slang for trout. Some people lump big 25 inch or better bows and browns in the same catagory as little stocker fish that eat Powerbait! I am not saying fishinguy falls into this category, just that is where the term comes from.
I love walleye also, especially when I want to eat fish, but there is no comparison in the fighting ability of the two! If you want to eat fish, do the lake a favor and harvest a couple of Pike while you are there.

Bigvic, where were you guys planning on fishing on sunday we will be in a green f250 powerstroke and a gold 2wd chevy. We will be fishing around the north boat ramp.Neal thanks for clarifying slimers for me,I don't have anything against big trout its the little worm stealers I hate.

Yeah the little stockers are of zero interest to me also!
Last year the hot bait at early ice was small 1" plastic crawfish on a 1/32 oz jighead fished totally still about six inchs off the bottom. Add some scent like Berkley Strike to it, if you have some. Those big trout eat alot of crawfish and I never seen a lake that has more crawfish than 11-Mile! It will be interesting to see how the smallmouths that were stocked over a year ago fair there?

There is an excellent article about 11-Mile this morning in the Rocky Mnt. news. Be careful, the lid sounds iffy?

Fishnguy,
I can't tell you exactly where but it will be the north end. Just listen for the sound of many empty beer cans crashing on the ice. Maybe we'll see ya.

I just got back from there.... GREAT fishing! You guys are going to POUND them!! Use a Bergie worm or a Rat finkie in white or glow color tipped with a wax worm and let it sit still.. On the other pole jig a small silver kastmaster tipped with a half a crawler. I caught 4 the other night between 17-20" and a hammerhandle in about an hour and a half. Saw another guy pull in 2 24" rainbows right next to me. The ice is fine... Just don't go near any open water. I drilled through about 6" by stoll mountain, and also fished at the cove at Roger's mountain. GOOD LUCK! Tim

I have been fishing there for 20 years and one of things you always see at early ice is people fising to deep! I don't know how many time's I have gone fishless over about 20 feet of water then moved into the first major break or weedline in about 10 feet of water and started to catch fish. It seems like those fish start to relate to the main channel and deeper water later in the season? Except for the kokanee! Sometime's the boat ramp area on the north side is hot at early ice, if the ice is safe? Later in the season Witcher's cove out over the channel is a great spot for both trout and an occational Koke. The islands are good for everything, including Pike, but I wouldn't venture out that far yet!

Fishnguy,
Sounds like you guys left with everybody else. We stayed and got pounded by the gales, all ##### day. I hope it ain't that bad all the time. Anyway, we ended with two three pounders and I lost two nice ones at the hole. I think the front that moved through changed their mood. Better luck next time.

Whats been the best type of presentation Neal? Looks like we might be heading towards 11 mile if we get a chance to get out on the ice.

90% of the time, if I am fishing in mountains I have two rods rigged and going. One has small Blue/Silver Kastmaster on my jigging rod and the other is a rod fished dead stick with a 1" Charteuece Crappie Tube and a mealworm. I just let the tube sit motionless and it always gets bites, even during the worst bites!
Every pike i have caught thru the ice at 11-Mile the last several years, has fallen for 5" Banjo Minnow just ripped jigged under the hole.
Fished last night and we caught 6. Between 15"-18". All Rainbows. I was jigging at first but then went with a small jig tipped with a wax worm. Let it sit still..... We were out from Stoll Mountain in about 9 feet of water. Lost a Hog mama at the hole that looked like it was in the 5 to 6 lb. class. Tim

Tim-
When you say you were fishing at night, do you mean truly at night?? What times? I've been curious whether night ice fishing at Eleven Mile is productive. I know it is at some other mountain lakes. Thanks.

I can't speak for winter but during summer and fall the best time to fish 11-mile is at night. The crawfish come out at night and molt their shells on the shallow rocks. Those big trout love those softshell crawdads and juvinile crawfish. We used to come up about 3:00 AM and fish 11-mile, then head over to Spinney once the sun came up. Whether you are using jigs or streamers, make sure they are big and black!
