View Full Version : Game Hogs at Webster SD
We were there last week and had the opportunity to watch the SD DNR in action, good work.
I can't understand why people have to go some where and think they have the right to take over their limit of fish.
When we got back to the motel on 12/12/02 it was interesting to see the DNR there questioning the 7 men(game hogs) from Wisconson, can you believe it, counting perch!
These guys decided the fishing was so good they thought they could double dip on Thurs. I don't know what gave them the right to do that but it was good to see them get caught(and people wonder why the limits are changing out there).
I heard the Sioux Falls paper had a story on this on Sunday.
I hope people like this loose privilages for a long time, not only in SD but in other states also.
Have fun but stay within the rules.

We should all have the TIPS number on speed dial....
" Fishing is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope "
I have it tattoo'd on my forehead, backwards so I can read it in my rear-view mirror. :D
Read this on Tony Dean's website. The seven guys were charged with 14 perch over the legal limit each. Total of 358 perch were seized. $50/fish for a total of $17,900 in charges they could be facing!
Good, hammer it to them. Too many of us spend half the winter worrying whether we should keep 5 or 10 perch for fear of hurting the lakes that we love, and these jerks are helping themselves to more perch than most of us keep in 3 years.

These guys got caught. How many others have done the same and not gotten caught?
I think if you get caught you should not be able to fish or hunt in the USA for 5 years and pay a fine.
Depending on the severity. Some people make honest mistakes, but these guys were way over the line. I'd like to see them lose their hunting/fishing privileges in sd forever.
Here is my biggest complaint or concern: First, did these guys know what the rules were, or were they assuming the 25 perch that they could take up until last year? Second, if they know the rules, what the h$## do people like this think? If they were intentionally over harvesting, throw the book at them!!
I hope for the sake of fishermen it was an honest (?) mistake. Regardless, they won't be back for a while.

That's why they make a fishing handbook, so we all know the rules. Plus there are signs at alot of the public landing areas that say this lake has a limit of 10 perch. They knew they were braking the law. Even if they thought the limit was 25 with 50 in possesion they were still over their limit. 7guys x 25perch = 175perch x 2days = 350. They were caught with 358 perch.
There willl be more people getting caught too. Waubay lake has a 2 walleye limit begining the first of 2003. The game hogs won't like that if they get into a nice batch of walleyes.
They did know the rules.
They were caught coming back to the fish cleaning shack the second time on that day.
The DNR followed them in and let them clean a few more and then took care of business.
I also was told that in the Sioux Falls paper it said these people were going to loose privilages in SD. it did not have a time limit on it though.
Every fisherman knows it's their responsibility to know the regs of the water they're fishing. These JOKERS shouldn't be let in the STATE again, let alone to fish here! Don't give these losers the credibility of possibly not knowing the limit or anyone else for that matter.
As EYES stated, these guys got caught - there are hundreds of others that are doing the very same thing. Sometimes our enforcement is required to set an example to deter as many future PIGS as we can. I sure hope they get the MAXIMUM penalty for such an action.
There isn't anything that torques me more than this!

I feel the stiffer the penalty the better. There are no "honest" mistakes. It's called ignorance at best. If you don't know the rules for a body of water, find out before you fish it. Now if that had been largemouth bass they over harvested, give them a reward. :-)

maybe they have no food?
Hungry? If they were that hungry maybe they should have saved the gas, motel and bait money and stayed in WI and bought groceries.

The problem with these situations is that the judges rarely hand down much in the way of fines and seizures. Most likely they will plea bargain it down and they'll soon be doing the same thing again. I would like to see these guys lose their privileges AND their equipment plus a hefty fine. If there were more sentences like that less and less people would be tempted to risk it.

I would say this was intentional. I can see maybe if a person was over by 1 or 2 perch I could belive it was an accident and maybe just give them a warning but when it comes to hundreads over your limit that is no accident I say throw the book at them.Loose all hunting and fishing privliges in the U.S. and Canada for the rest of there life cuz if they did it once they probally have done it before and will do it again. Then I would give them 250 hours of community work every summer picking up trash around the lake they took all of these fish from. And yes while they are doing this community work they must wear a big sign that says :I am the fish Poacher from Wisconsin; The people of South Dakota are darn proud of the fishing and hunting we have here we do not need slobs like this to come to our state we will do just fine without there revinue from the money they would spend here.!!!!!!!!! MERRY X MAS to all. Larry
