How do portable fish finders work? Also I'm hoping to get one to put on rental boats. How do I put them on boats that are in the water?

You should be able to make just about any depth finder "portable." Simply attach the transducer to a board as you would to the transom. When you are ready to attach to a boat, simply place the board to position the transducer and clamp it to the transom w/ 1 or 2 c clamps.

My portable unit came with a suction cup attached to the transducer. But I found at high speeds the suction cup came off, so I went with the board and c- clamp set-up.
