To all those that are coming up / plan on fishing Houghton Lake (central MI) I urge extreme caution. I pulled some satelite imagery for the MI DNR today on a rumor that there has been an increasingly large hole forming in the long point area (2 deaths within the last 48 hours). Needless to say I was surprised when I looked at the imagery. Basically the hole runs along the south side of the point from east side of the lake to the west side of the lake, past the point. At points the hole is over 1/4 mile wide and continues to break open further. This seems odd because of our cold weather in the recent past. Unfortunately I can not post the imagery. I talked to a couple of biologists and geologists and right now there is no explanation as to why this is happening.
I urge caution if you plan on being on houghton lake in the near future. This area, according to reports, had approximately 12" of very good ice not so long ago. There are also a few other smaller spots of concern, the mouth of the muskeegon river is opening up as well as the heights area.
Be careful out there, I heard enough about deaths this week on the news.
