Portable-izing X-85 for ICE.

LEI Extras sells a contraption that makes the X-85 portable. It includes the base and the transducer. It costs about $75. Will that work for ice fishing or do I need to buy the $27 iceducer thing?

It says it runs on D-Cell batteries, how many and how long will they last on average?

It doesn't get too cold in Colorado and if it is that cold I'm staying home, so I'm not worried about the LCD.

Any information/advice someone can give me about what I'm thinking of doing would help a bunch.
