A flippin' stick with a moderate-sized baitcasting reel will not be excellent for trolling bottom bouncers, but will be useful for a host of other techniques as well. Don't cheap out on the rod, I did, and expect it to break with the first large pike it encounters. If there was a flippin Ugle Stick, it would be amost perfect. Quantum or similar-priced rods will suffice.

FIG RIGS came out with a new trolling rod this year. check with Kevin at figrigrods.com.
I purchased a rod named " bottom bouncer" from Bass Pro Shops.
It is in their walleye series. I have used it for 2 years and
it's been great. Equiped with fire line it's sensitive enough
to distinguish bottom features with the bouncer and tough
enough to handle gig pike
on Erie you use J.B.I. or browing planer board rods 8'6" in lenght. we run them off of mast and boards, or in line boards. We have taken eye's up to 10 lbs. with the board on the release medthod that means fighting the board and fish..never broke one yet.

I just ordered two of the PWT Combo Casting from Cabela's for $49.95 each in the 7' MH. Waiting to see what they are like. They are in the Spring Catalog. Looked like a good deal. I've had good success with Pinnacle products so far. Can't wait to try these.

If your looking at trolling heavy bottom bouncers, Hookhider makes a great trolling rod. Its telescopic to fit into most rod lockers, but a great rod.
I use them all the time on Lake Erie for planers and bottom bouncers.

Just got the rods in today.
For $49.95 each they are well worth the cost. Just the reels alone are worth the $49.95 I got the 7' MH rod combo.
Can't wait to try them.

If you are planning to hold the rod in your hand, while running your tiller, you will need a differant type of rod than if you plan to put it in a rod holder. Mike Mclelland discusses this in the pro section.
This subject has been discussed many times in the past. there is a lot of useful info. in the archives that you might find interesting.

I don't try to get into performing brain surgery on this... I get the $28 7 foot Shakespeare Ugly sticks in MH and leave it at that. Coupled with a Diawa 27LC, it's a pretty nice combo.
It's not exactly a finesse presentation, so these will perform well for you. At least, that's been my experience.

Bouncing can be a finesse presentation - or you can put them in holders also. In some situations, I use lighter weight and "pull" my bouncer forward & pause, forward & pause to impart a stop start action to my spinner or bait. Following contorus in relatively shallow waters 7ft +/- can be a great way to prospect and learn the lake.

I picked up 3- $10 reels at garage sale- Abu-Garcias I think and put them on 7' cheap(under $50) rods. They're MH and I also uce them for trolling cranks/boards and snapwieghts. With fireline the rods are sensitive enough for bouncing and heavy enough for trolling. Cheap (I guess I am)but effective setup. P.S. I get all my gear from Cabalas- for free!! Approx. $300 per month. Jealous??
