I'm planning on trying to sell some fishing rods on eBay. The rods are Loomis 842S 7' one piece rods and need help in figuring out how to ship them.
A long card board tube seems best but I have never seen them sold. PVC would work but seems pretty heavy.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Trying to make sure the rods are safe, but not too heavy (and costly).
Thanks.

You might want to see if a framing shop or art gallary has any cardboard tubes you could get cheap. You can tape them togeather with heavy duty tape. Not sure if it's the best option, but first that came to mind.
Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Just stop by your local tackle shop and ask if they have any extra carboard rod tubes. That's what all the rods they buy are usually shipped in. Good Luck

Do you have a "Mailboxes Etc" by you? They are a National franchise (mailing franchise, that uses Fed Ex), and have them. Or, you can try going to your local baitshop who sells rods. They often have some sitting around that they could probably just give to you. Mailboxes Etc. will charge you for them.
Just a thought..

When Loomis sent my new rod, it was shipped in pvc, I don't know if it was schedule 40, but it was 3 inch.

Ryan,
just rec'd two rods that i bought from ebay. 6'6" long rods were packaged in a length of 3" pvc "3500 pound crush" sewer pipe which is much thinner and lighter than schedule 40. Postage was $7.35. I've rec'd two piece rods in cardboard tubes and they arrived ok. Heavy cardboard tubes would probaly be ok for longer rods but pvc was nice.
email me if questions,

Ryan,
Go with the 3" pvc sewer pipe.
If you weigh the required length for this pipe - compared to the same length of the crush proof cardboard tubes - I think that you will find that the 3" pvc is lighter.
A 10 foot section of this pipe sells for about $3.
Then you can buy a cap for each end for about $.80
It works well.
Take care

I agree with REW. Don't mess around. Get the PVC and do it right. Also, a good thing to do when you ship the rod is to tie a length of string around the reel seat or butt of the rod, run this string through a hole in the end cap or something and tie it off snug. This will keep the tip of the rod from making contact with the end of the tube and thus no broken tip from shipping.
Best Regards,

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-01 AT 08:17PM (CST)[p]Thanks for all of the input troops. Looks like the PVC is the way to go -- now I just have to find some of the PVC sewer pipe. I guess for a $150 rod, another few bucks to get there safe is not so much.

Checked with the only local tackle shop that is open and he has not received the rod shipments for the spring season yet and they tossed the stuff from last year.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Why not just use pvc water pipe? 1 1/2 in
is plenty big,& you get 10ft for $2.oo bucks, end caps for 25 cents & its light.

Check with the local auto parts store. They get brake line shipped in cardboard tubes. Thats how we protect our rods when we go on long trips.
