The bite at catawba was real good today. Was fishing just south west of green island. There were only about 10 people out at the most today. Most people had fish. The 911 crack is about 18 inches wide at the most. Other than that the ice is about 14 inches in most areas.
Have fun if you get out and becareful and watch the winds.

Did you get out from the mainland or did you have to take an airboat?

Is there anyone working just west of the Catawba State park? And if so, are you having any luck. Also, is the ice safe in the South Passage this year? Any luck around Mouse IS? Thanks.

Which winds are best so you don't have to worry about the 911 crack? And which winds are bad? Was that 911 crack the only crack you had to cross, arn't those other two cracks still there?

It seems that this year any or no wind has been enough to change the 911, But traditionally south and or east are usually the less than desireable directions. As of last friday the 911 was the only open crack we had to cross to get about 4 mile west. Just make darn sure you have a good set of planks, an 18 inch crack with open water in it is not much fun to try to jump!!

Papascott thanks for the info. And a big 10/4 on the planks my atv doesn't jump to good either.

This has been a strange year when we had a lot of really cold weather with no wind the passage never froze .For most of the year , there was open water from green to east of mouse then over to Kelley's . The high east winds tried to bust up the ice line . Then , high west south/west winds took some away , but not much . Then one night , everyone was saying , if it didn't break off this weekend , then it's not going anywhere.By 4 p.m , a snow strom came in with a north / west wind and 20 people got rescued .It cut a big piece off from west of green to catwaba . Most sane people have been off the ice at catwaba for some time . But As of last weekend there looked to be ice in the passage now .
Before the high winds started , we spent 2 days fishing about 300 yard from open water , getting as close to the passage as we could .
3 of us had our limit 2 days in a row before noon. No one was over there for one thing , and we had good current .
