I need your opinion, what Lake in South Dakota should I fish in the next couple of months? If you could pick just one lake to fish this year, which would it be in S.D.?
Thanks, got my new boat and need to find some Lakes!!
Scott H.
Where are you from?
Does it matter how much you want to drive?
Obviously, the Northeast region has a mecca of dandy lakes such as Waubay, Bitter, Lynn, Big Stone, Traverse....
Mid Southern (where I am from) we have Thompson, Poinsett, Sania, Brandt, Madison, 81 Ponds. Thompson being your best choice here.
The reservoirs are probably your best all around bet.
chamberlin good all around fishing year around both above and below the dam
Been to Big Stone many, many times. I have always wanted to head a bit further north to Traverse. What is your take on that lake compared to Big Stone?
Thanks,
Foz

On the topic of Traverse, does anyone know where to aquire a good map of this lake? Would prefer to find a freebie on the net. I have visited the South Dakota map website with no luck. I suppose it my be discluded because it is a border water.

If you're determined to fish a good lake, I'd vote for Lake Thompson. If you just want a good place to fish, I'd go to the river at Chamberlain.

If you go to the Minnesota DNR website, click on Lake Finder and you can access a map of Traverse. The maps aren't great, but should give you a good idea of the structure and depth. It's free , too.

That'd be my choices also. April, May and June are usually excellent on both of those waters.

Traverse can be an outstanding walleye lake. Big fish are in that body of water. Just a word of caution. That lake is very dangerous if you just run and gun across it. Lots of rock piles that sit just below the surface of the water. Lake maps don't show all of them either. So, just be careful and don't go cruising through areas you're not familiar with. If the wind kicks up, that lake produces some hog walleyes.
Shadrap-
I swung by Ben's bait and grabbed a map a few weeks ago.. Plan on fishing it this summer. Maybe the WWA tourney also.
Yes, the map looks scary!! The bait shop guy marked the bad areas (about 1/2 the lake)! Can you give any advice of where to go or not to go?? Thanks!
I'm told that there will be some maps with danger areas marked passed out at the rules meeting the night before the WWA tournament on Traverse, for those who are interested.
Dusty
Yes it is. Sunday the 6th.

If you wanna know, go find the song - Phish - "Roses are Free"
It's a Ween song, but the Phish cover of it is better.

Lake Traverse Walleye Masters has a 90 boat tournament the Saturday before the WWA on Lake Traverse - May 3,2003. There are 7 openings remaining as of today. This tournament always fills. If you are interested in fishing this tournament you can contact Circle K resort at 605-694-2676. This would be a good opportunity for those fishing the WWA to get some experience with the lake prior to the WWA tournament. Lake Traverse can be very rewarding but extreme caution must be used when navigating it. Talk to as many fisherman as possible before heading out. Best of Luck!

Eyez, are you fishing the tournament in Chambermaid on the 19th?
Scott
I wasn't planning on it. Is that Allen's tournament? Depending on how things go, I might if I can get in, but I don't have any plan to.
Are you going to?

Last week Tuesday, there were only two openings left in the Missouri River Walleye Classic, or Garry Allens tournament on April 26 and 27th. I'm assuming it has filled by now, but in case anyone is wanting to check it out, the number is 605-734-5591.
