I have 20 lb. fireline on my trolling reels .How often should it be changed ? It's 3 years old so far no problems. Also with a mono backing to fill the reel is 125 yards enough fireline for pulling boards?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-01 AT 09:42PM (CST)[p]Probably more important than the years would be the wear and tear your line receives. (I just put 4 seasons on mine with alot of outings per season) If you are fishing on rocky bottoms you will get quicker wear. Also a place to watch for wear is the location of your planer board. One way to help that is to occasionaly trim 24"-30" off end thus changing location of the board. I fish Erie east basin. I'm fishing suspended fish so I'm not pounding bottom but I use the red releases on Offshore boards with a double wrap and do notice wear at board location. Be as gentle as possible unhooking releases. Offshore has just came out with a new release for the superlines. The longest lead I run on Erie is 300' plus 60' after the board. You could fit that out of a 125yd spool.

Eric, I started out using the 125yard spools and found that after trimming and breakoffs it disappeared quickly. Now I buy the 1000 yard spools and put 250 yards on each linecounter. I'll respool every 2-3 years. I take what's left on the linecounters and spool it on my spinning reels(the "used" line goes to the bottom of the spool and the "new" unused part becomes new Fireline on my spinning equipment) Recycling I guess, saves some bucks too....

You can reverse it as the line starts to show wear. Then the worn end will be 100+ yards into the spool. Should double the life of the line for you.

Ditto that.

Where can I find these new releases made for fireline type lines? I have been hearing about these releases for a year but can't find them anywhere.

I have also been looking for them.

As a substitute I have modified my off shore boards by replacing the original clips with the church tackle clips.

Theyr are carried by Offshore Tackle. I purchased mine from Mark Romanack at the Pontiac Silverdome boat show. Marks web site is www.precisiontrolling.com and the phone number is
1(800)353-6958. The product section of the site was under construction today but, you could always call to order. If you don't have it alreday you might ask about the Precision Trolling book. The 6th Edition should be out now. I have the previous ones but, I update mine when they issue a new one. Good fishing!
