View Full Version : Bow mount trolling motor used as a transom mount.

I was considering the options of getting an additional trolling motor for the transom. This would be used in the event of back trolling and for those time, when it simply makes more sense to have power on the stern - rather than on the bow.

Although, not that expensive -- rather than buying an additional trolling motor, has anyone considered the ramifications of mounting the bow mounted trolling motor on the stern.

Since my trolling motor is electrically steered with auto pilot - it would be a slick setup on the stern as well as on the front.

I noted that - there is a pontoon mount available for some of the trolling motors - that use a front door clamp to mount the trolling motor, as is the case for my bow mounted big water mount.

Since I have wave wackers and really don't want to chop a hole in them, I was considering the idea of simply mounting the trolling motor on one of the gunnels.

Since you are back trolling anyway - and you typically want the stern quartering into the wind - it would seem reasonable to have this as a mount point.

Unusual perhaps -- but I am wondering if anyone has tried such a setup and the down side of such a setup.

Take care

doug hannon (the bass professor)has had a front mount trolling motor on his bass boat mounted on the rear gunnel for quite a few years. (it's a hand control and not a foot control) always seemed like a good idea to me, keeps it out of the water (unlike transom mounts) while running etc. only draw back i see is that it could be "in the way" depending on how you use your boat since it would take up 4 ft of one of your rear gunnels. hope that helps

Thanks for the response.
I had thouht of that. I would only have the motor on the back if I was actually backtrolling. Otherwise - any time that I was docking or other wise around shore, I would move the motor back to the front and out of the way.

Thanks for the heads up.

That was exactly one of my thoughts -- much easier to keep out of the water - and in general easier to use.

Take care
