Robin Hanninen of Hibbing caught a nice walleye today, 9# 2 oz, 31" long out of Basswood Lake using a rainbow minnow.

5/10 Annette Horvat of Ely caught a 7 pound walleye, 30" long, also out of Basswood using a rainbow minnow.

5/10 Jack Nevala of Brooklyn Center, MN found a 6# 10 oz walleye, 29" long, in Basswood of course, using a rainbow minnow.

5/10 Jory Johnson, 10 years old, was overjoyed when he pulled in a 7# 8 oz walleye, 29.5" long out of Ely's own hometown lake of Shagawa!

5/10 Mason Burd of Ely found an 11# 8 oz, 32.5 " long Lake Trout in Burntside Lake, didn't say what he used for bait.

5/8 Nick Beck of Princeton was lucky and caught a 1# 5 oz, 13.75" long Crappie out of One Pine Lake, caught on a minnow.

The weather, full of rain and wind gusts seemed to hamper people a bit, but the ones who were able to get out seemed to be having a great time!

I'm sure we'll have more come in tonight and tomorrow! :)

Actually walleyes in Basswood are doing pretty well.

Most people I have had come in have had the most luck on either fathead or rainbow chubs. Not much action on crawlers, actually better on leeches, go figure! :-)

So far the walleyes are still a little slow except for up in Crooked where people cannot believe how well they are doing!

Basswood is still better for minnows, rainbow, fatheads and now even pike suckers. But in the smaller, warmer areas, the leeches are working well now too.

The northern pike are hitting extremely aggressively right now so watch your stringers! A customer had 3 walleyes hanging off his canoe and a northern came by and tried to bite all of them at once!

Wish I could figure out how to post pictures but here are a few we got last week.

Dr Barbara Moor Pulliam St Louis Park MN Northern pike 12 # 39", out of Shagawa, using a shiner

Kelsy Arntson, 12 years old, Maple Grove MN, Northern pike, 8# 32", Kawishiwi River, using a minnow.

Mitchell Kukson, Pine Island MN, Smallie, 3# 18", out of Kawishiwi River, using a minnow.

Mitchel Kukson, Pine Island MN Northern pike, 10.5 #, 39 inches, out of Kawishiwi River on a minnow.

Kelsy Velcheff of Ely, MN Crappie, 1.5 #, 13.5 ", out of White Iron, on a rainbow chub.

Jon-Erle Reid, 13 years old, caught the northern pike everyone dreams of! :) In an "Ely area lake" he hooked on to a 26.5 pound fighting northern pike! Jon's fish was 47.5 inches long and had a 19.5 inch girth! A Rapala was the lure that this fish hit on.

John,

What's the water temp running on lakes up there right now? Will be on Shagwas this weekend and am interested. Sounds like minnows are doing better than leeches right now for walleye? Thanks for the response. Bret
