Have you been feeling kinda edgy? Spouse would like you to take a long walk off a short pier? Are you constantly needing more boat shows, reading walleye insider every night to fall asleep? Calling all your fishing buddies while your half popped? You may have a new disorder called N.O.W.(Need Open Water) This is similar to S.A.D. but only afflicts persons that love to fish from their boats. The other symptoms are cumpulsive crankbait purchasing and sitting in your boat in the garage in sub zero weather with your favorite fishing rod in your hand. At this time there is no cure but the symptoms are know to diminish with warmer weather and can be minimized with large amount of fishing conversation and moderate amounts of beer.(Or Visa Versa) I should warn you this is a seasonal disorder and there is no known cure. For some strange reason this disorder is only know to affect persons in the northern part of the hemisphere and peaks during January and Febuary. Anyone with a known cure for this disorder should contact the Surgeon General at BR-549.... Ask for Junior..

I love the boat fishing as much as the next guy. But I do
have a cure for what your talking about. Try ICE FISHING.
We have great ice and fishing here on Saginaw Bay and
have been having a blast this winter going out. Just
thought would try to help. lol

OK so that is what it is called. I know that must be my problem. It is good to know what it is called so I can tell my wife that I won't be needding to see the doctor after all. I think that ice fishing does help the symptoms a little but it is not a complete cure. Thank you Dutchman for letting me know about NOW. Dream about a BIG one! TM.

Skeeter, tests have shown that sitting on large blocks of ice with short fishing poles can temporarily diminish the symptoms also. :)

And here The psycholigist had told me it was a Christmas, holiday thing. Wow glad to know I'm not the only one to sit in the boat 15-0. I also sit out there and program gps cords. Also guilty of many catalogs, cleaning oiling reels, I find that an occasional ice contest helps, but not much,Hey my buddy turned my heat up so darn high one day and I actually seen a mosquito!.
Ice fishing is not the cure. -20 wind chill today, 1 walleye and not even a keeper (like women, catch & release)(my swede would kill me if she saw that!!) But anyway, while thawing out the frozen noggin we set scene for digging boat out for river trips coming up soon, including bought some additional toys for boat.
All is not lost. Come on spring!!!!!

Ice fishing sure does help, but in its infinite wisdom, the DNR closes season on gamefish today in the Minn waters I fish.
Haven't seen temps at 40 or above for over 100 days -- lots of ice, but no season left for species I seek.
Time to get in the van and motor out.

Would appreciate some suggestions -- My Dakota fishing has been restricted to Garrison Dam tailrace, Sakakawea, and Oahe. The perch sound good. Got a tip for me as to where? Contacts? Place to stay (not a Hilton or Ritz)?
Any info appreciated. Thanks.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-01 AT 01:03PM (CST)[p]Jeff Olson at Cottonwood Resort near Lake city SD is a good place to stay Cisco, good food too. I just heard from him and the 25th through 28th of Feb and much of early March is open for a cabin, big cabin so pack em in , very reasonable! Jeff's email, charlies@brittonsd.com
From there you could work ,Cattail, Roy,Mallard,Lightning,Clear, and a short hop to Waubay just to the south. Lot's of good fishing in the region and all with less than a 30 mile drive. The best perch action is very close to Lake City on the Lakes near Ft. Sissaton.

Lotta snow there, you might want to bring a 4-wheeler or snowmobile. There is some winterkill concern on the shallower lakes. Call the Fisherman Village and check the web sight www.sdglpta.org .... Jeff

Thanks much for the info, you guys. I've copied your posts and will make contacts after next week. Got one date with the tax man to take care of before I can split this place for a while.
Don't have an ATV to bring along, but will make do w/o one. My wife can carry a good load.
Take care -- will be in touch.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-01 AT 02:36PM (CST)[p]Late ice is best Cisco, the snow will be melted down by then. Email me at will and I may meet up with you if the scheduling works. I will be there often in March. It never hurts to bring a rod or two for opan water pike action. If the right conditions hit you can dead bait opan water piggy pike, and ice fish perch on the same trip.

Sounds like a trip for yourself and Rough Guy. That would be a once in a lifetime. For your current marriage anyways. Make sure you have enough time for the fishing and you don't get "distracted". LOL
Hey guys, it's not that tough to head south far enough to find open water. Granted, it would take a weeks vacation time as you would have to drive a couple of days south if you live in MN and a couple of days back, but it doesn't have to be that expensive. Forget the Florida charter. Drag your boat, stay in a motel 6 and have a blast. Some of us are lucky to spend the winter in AZ where that disease is unknown. I'm a MN transplant, but don't ask me if I miss ice fishing - puulllleeeezze. The only thing I miss down here is going to a lutefisk and lefse supper at the Norwegian Lutheran church in Lake Wobegon!
