Has anyone noticed day in and day out a brand or home made tip-up that seems to catch more walleyes any where?

Any tip up placed in the right spot will catch a walleye. Obviously, it must be sensitive or atleast adjustable. The classic Polar tip-up by HT Enterprises is the best down to -35 degrees. Avoid any wood models, fancy hole covered models etc. You want something simple that doesn't freeze, collect ice/snow etc. P.S. Make sure you monitor the line/minnow condition, you may get bit without notice. Tip-ups have a way of making any fisherperson lazy!

Thank you for your information Josh. I was sure it was a choice between the polars or beaver dams. Just curious, does the polar's flag have any tendencies to falsely tip off in higher wind situations? Please let me know. Hope to hear from you.

I fish with Polar IIs and find them great. I use a clip on weight to find bottom and the mark the poition on the line with a tiny split shot. I keep this ahead or downstream of the line guide. On windy days orientate the flag so the wind is blowing the flag into the trip mechanism. You will get very few false trips if you do this. The other way around the wind can blow the flag from its mooring spot. Good luck

In warm weather, you have a hard time beating the Mr. TipUp. It is a windjammer style that has a lot of adjustment for jigging stroke and has a built-in light. Only negative is that I haven't seen them for a few years. I do not know if they are still in business, they used to be made in Richfield or Hartford, WI.

In cold weather I prefer the Frabil hole cover style tipup. I have used the Polars for many years and had almost no problems with them, they were great. Snowmobiles hitting them, took at least one per year. I started buying the Frabils since they pack so nicely in a bucket, no mess! I found that they are every bit as good as the Polar (even in sub-zero conditions) with the addition that the Frabil prevents the holes from freezing. Give them a try and you will like them!
