View Full Version : Non-RCL boat resale

There seems to be a lot of interest in participating in the RCL. A number of people I've talked to are selling their boats in order to buy something that will let them compete in RCL.
Doesn't this diminish the resale value of non-RCL boats? At a minimum, the pool of potential buyers would be reduced.
I'd really appreciate hearing from others more knowledgeable on this subject. Thanks in advance to all who reply.
(I realize the boat would still have value to someone who has no plans to compete - but why would someone buy a competition caliber boat that is automatically excluded from the biggest series? Only to have trouble selling it when that time comes...)

Steve do you think the RCL is going to put the other boat companies out of business? I don't think there that many guy's out there that are going to put up $1000.00 to fish these tournaments in hopes of making the championship! This year it has gotten alot more crowded with PWT guys! This is not going to effect the resale of my boat! This is going to flood the market with loaded boats that guys need to get rid of,only problem is that there going to take a bath on them!I fish tournaments, but I am not really interested in fishing RCL!PWT had this problem, local waters with locals,pros,want-a-be's,Now you have to fish the complete circit or one side or your not in!One other thing how would you like to be an amateur, day one Bob No-buddy--Day two Joe-Smo an YOUR OUT!Out of the 200 plus boats at every tournament 20% will be real pro's the other 80% your taking your chances!
I think what RCL is trying to do for themselfs is great for them it's just not the format that I want to fish!Even though the MONEY is awsome!!!
What the H-E-L-L is "resale value"?
I give my boats to my sons when I buy new ones, and I can't imagine why I'd want to spend money on a tournament that depends on what decal is stuck on the side of my hull!
Do golf tournaments depend on what golf cart you drove up in?

I'm curious to see what will happen now that it appears Genmar has acquired the OMC line of boats. The only really big one left out of the corp stable is Tracker (Fisher, etc.). Watch out, too, for some interesting new price strategies with less competition in the industry.

No offense intended Steve, but I think your thinking too hard. It's a big world out there & as most walleye 'pros' know, the greatest portion of that big world see the group you're discussing as pretty much of a yawn. That may seem to be a bold statement on a board such as this, but if anyone thinks it isn't true then they need to come up for air. Yes, pros & tourney promotions impact the industry, but if it all stopped today, life would continue.
People buy higher end boats because they hope to get higher quality/functionality & because they have the money...borrowed or otherwise. The same holds true for the used market...probably even more so as many used boats are basically new with the bugs worked out...and they are a heck of a lot less expensive than new. The 'less expensive' part opens up a whole new group of potential owners..the ones that want the high end-new boats, but either can't afford them or are too smart to buy new. I wouldn't worry about a depressed market.

No offense taken, Kevin. I'm considering buying a used performance type boat and you're right - I am thinking about it too much :-). Before I plunk down the kind of money required, I need to be as comfortable as I can be with my decision. There are a number of boats I'd be happy with. Truth be told, some of the ones I find most interesting are not RCL boats.

Hans,
Depends on if the major sponsors of the golf tournament are golf cart manufacturers....that is if they allowed players to use carts. The 3 boat maufacturers that sponsor (R-anger, C-crestliner, L-und)the RCL tourney pretty much have all the say in what decal is on the boats. Maybe a marketing ploy but I don't think it will ruin the used boat market.
We all know that tourneys are more popular these days, but I'd have to guess that the majority of walleye boat owners and buyers, while they may think someday they might try a tourney of some sort for fun, will never even be close to entering an RCL event.
There are a lot of pros here, but there even more of us who don't fish tourneys, I'd guess. That doesn't mean I WON'T get an RCL boat, but I probably won't get one just to fish some events.
Happy fishing,
Box
