Went back to Erieau, Canada for Steelhead yesterday 8-10-03. Took a 245 degree heading out from the pier heads and went about 11 miles. Set lines at 7:30am and caught our first steelhead at 7:35. Didn't even have 3 rods set.My son and I had a limit by 10:00am. now I don't pretend to be the best fisherman but the fishing is so good out there
that with a little trolling knowledge anyone can do the same. We ran 4 dipsies, 2 on each side. The outside rod was set on 3 and went 90ft back, and the inside dipsey was set on 2 and went 65ft back. Stinger spoons in confusion and purple with black ladderback pro kings were the best producers. We switched over to downriggers later in the morning and caught fish fom 19ft to 40ft down 25ft behind the cannonball. The biggest fish went 10.5lbs and the rest were nice 6lbs up to the 10.5. We were fishing in 68 ft of water and Capt Joe Belanger from Up Our Alley charters steered us in the right direction and told us what was hot. Most people will help the visiting fisherman on where to fish if you monitor Ch 71. The fishing should remain good right into Sept. Well good luck to all and if you can squeeze a trip to Erieau in the next few weeks, you won't be disappointed.

Hi,
At Wheatly you only have to fish 5 to 6 mi out.
May I be fishing somewhere Tomorrow
What was your trolling speed? We were in the same area and good only get Walleye and Sheepshead and a couple Steelies. I think we were fishing too deep and too slow. What size dipsies? Thanks.

JDH,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Had a busy evening. We use the big salmon dipsies with the ring on. I use a snubber and a 4ft leader of 30lb testAnde because they really hit the spoons hard. Most steelhead will jump as soon as they are hooked so you need a shock absorber to help from breaking them off, just my opinion. I troll about 2.5 to 3.0, and some guys troll up to 3.5 but I think right around 2.6 to 2.7 was my best speed. I take highway 401 out of Windsor to the Bloomfield Rd exit which is exit 81.You turn left go about 1/4 mile make a right and then a quick left by an old church I believe and take that road to where it deadends. There will be a golf course on the left just before you have to turn. Sorry I don't remember the names of the roads. You turn left on Rt 3 I believe and go untill you see the sign to Erieau. Turn right and you head right into Erieau. I live in Belleville Mi and it is 98 miles from my driveway. Most of the steelhead are high in the water column so don't fish deeper than 40ft down. Most of my fish came in the top 20ft in 68 ft of water. We landed 22 steelhead and had 28 on. Had the best day ever and I will probably be back next Sat. weather permitting. good luck and tight lines.

We used to go to Erieau a couple of times a year. I got sick of all the nets and we quit going over. It's good to hear that the fishings still good though. We mainly went for walleye since we gett all the steelhead we're interested in at Ludington on our summer vacation. Is the walleye fishing any good over there now? We're docked at Toledo beach and wonder if it's worth a run over anymore.

Sparky,
We used to fish for walleyes in Erieau a few years ago when it was real good, but I think the commercial netters took their toll on the walleye population. I haven't seen one net this year, and didn't see any last year. I think the netters are way out towards Ohio but thats just a guess. They are getting more walleyes this year than the last few, but I think you have to go out farther and target them. Guy at the marina on Sunday said someone went out 12 miles on sat. and limited out on nice walleyes (18). It would be great to see them make a comeback but if they do the nets will surely return. Good luck if you make the trip over and don't forget your birth certificate or passport because they are checking for them occasionally at the border.

marcbodi,
How do you get to Wheatly form Windsor/Detroit? I would like to try it this weekend. Is it the same program as Erieau for steelhead?
Thanks,
