I need a new starting battery for my 40 hp. Merc w/power trim and tilt. What size battery do I need? What brand do you recommend and why? The old battery doesn't have any size/rating on it.
Thanks!

Unless you have an unusual load of electronics and pumps, a size 27 (or even a size 24) should be good. Get a "marine" rated (vs "automotive") battery, and should have around 600MCA rating minimum.

If you are looking for a really good battery that will last a long time, I would recommned the TROJAN battery. They are excellent batteries and they really last. However, they are a little pricy, but I think well owrth it.

I agreee with Hans-600amps should do you fine.Just make sure it is a STARTING battery and not a DEEPCYCLE.

Thanks to all for the info!

Where do you find the Trojan batteries? I would like to $$ them before making a decision.
How has the Wolf river been? Do you do any ice fishing on it?
I am looking forward to trying the spring run again.

Brian....
You can find trojan batteries in Appleton. I think the name of the dealer is SBS but I can find out more. The wolf has been slow. Been out a couple times with no success. There is alot of ice on the river. Going to try to get out within the next week or so. Heard the walleyes are biting in New London. If you need more information on the trojans, email me and I can try to put you in contact with someone for the Trojan batteries.
