View Full Version : Abu 6500 or Shimano corsair 400?
In your opinion which of these reels would you recommend for dependability and user friendliness?
Thanks,

As an avid musky fisherman I would suggest the ABU. The corsair has had some major problems in the past. As a field editor for muskie central I would suggest having you post over on that site. You will get a lot of feed back on the reels. The nice thing about the abu's is if you are on vacation most fishing shops have parts for them...just a thought...Ben Remer
I have both the Corsair 300 and 400, bought when they first came out. Shimano relaced them both for free last year with their improved model. I have no complaints about the reels or the service. Abu Garcia, though, has a "buy one get one free" deal going on now for their anti backlash reels. You can get 2 6500's for the price of one, plus $10 shipping. Go to Abu-garcia.com for the details. Even if you don't need 2 yourself, you can find a buddy who does and split the price. You can even buy one size and get a different size free.
I've used both of these reels extensively, particularly for muskie fishing. As far as user-friendliness, it's a matter of personal preferrence - I like them both. For dependability and durability - no comparison, the 6500 is far better than the Corsair. I'll go through 2 or 3 Corsairs before replacing a 6500.
I know the 6500 has a clicker not sure about the corsair. Thats a nice feature for trolling.

The Corsair does not have a clicker. That is why I sold mine.

My vote goes to the Ambassadeur. Some of the Shimanos are outstanding reels, but my friends haven't had good luck with the Corsairs. The 6500's are pretty bulletproof-- they're one of my favorite reels for chinook salmon. I also like having the clicker for trolling.

I won a Corsair 400A at a musky meeting in Madison, Wi and it DOES have a clicker on it. Never have used the reel but it looks nice.

I have used Abu for about 13 years now 6500c3 hasn't let me down on salt or fresh water. They look ugly on the outside long before
anything goes wrong on the inside. I still have and use the first 2 I bought and more added on. Lawrence

I have a Corsair 400 and it DOES have a clicker - left side bottom...
Abu has it hands down, i have used both, and i also fish for musky, and still have all the abu,s that i started with, a couple have been worked on, but after 27 years of abuse i guess that can be expected.they just keep on tickin like a timex. good luck and good fishin.

New Corsairs are Gold..stay away from older Silver Models. I have a 400 and like it. Shimano has a $20 Rebate..saw it in Musky Hunter Magazine.
