View Full Version : question for Scott Fairbairn or Ron Anlauf
I am interested in getting a Raytheon chartplotter. Noted your posts below. How much detail is there on the charts/maps used with the unit. For example, do they show contour lines, bouy markers, reefs etc. Also, how do you load the individual charts/maps on to the unit. Thanks for your help.

The detail and maps depend on which unit your are looking at. For example the 520 takes C-Map cartridges while the 420 takes Navionics charts. This is good news for you because if you fish big waters C-Map has awesome detail in their Super Lake series and on their Great Lakes Charts. On the other hand, Navionics is working with Fishing Hot Spots to put those maps on their chips which will load into the 420. It really depends on where you fish as to which unit would work best for you.

Scott,
I don't care for bottom detail, but am interested in a realistic representation of the shoreline, islands, etc., on larger inland lakes (Mille Lac, Vermilion, and similar). Mainly I use my GPS to keep my bearings, allow (prudent) navigation in low visibility (night/fog), etc.
Is their a good GPS (any brand) that you'd recommend for that?

Hans,
Most companies manufacturing GPS units at this point have pretty good mapping capabilities. Some have very basic maps preprogrammed, others require downloading information into the unit, many units take mapping cartridges. For the bigger lakes that you were mentioning many GPS units would suit your needs. The Raymarine units that were asked about in this thread take mapping cartridges, either C-MAP or Navionics, depending on the units. Both mapping companies offer tremendous detail. I don't know if this answers what you are looking for but the point is that GPS technology can be as simple or complex (detailed) as you want it to be.
