For the 1st time New Jersey will allow catch and release fishing for walleye from March 1st to April 30th. My question is what would be the best way of finding and catching these fish. I will be fishing a res.( 9.9 hp max.) and a electric motor only lake. The res. is steep off the banks with some rip rap and flooded trees, a river channel winds through these trees and in the back of this cove is where the river inlet is. Do eyes in res. spawn in river inlets such as this? I have not much experience in pre spawn fishing. The electric only lake is basically a big fish bowl with some shallow flats near the edges. There is a big state beach area on this lake, will walleyes spawn in the sand or out on rocky humps in the lake? From what I have read, I would think a jig and minnow would be a start. Are these fish catchable by trolling crankbaits? Any other helpful hints on location and bait would be great. I could really use the help in starting this year off under new conditions. Thanks to all who answer. JJ

I could venture a bunch of guesses, but I think my first move would be to call the local fish biologist and have a nice friendly chat with him or her. ;-)
