Is there a general rule of thumb for how deep each color of leadcore gets you down.I know leadcore is very speed dependent but say for instance.....If each color got u down 7 ft.and u wanted to get down to 21 feet, you would put out 3 colors. Thanks Again,Kdog

You also need to know the depth your lure will be running with the given amount of line out and add that to the depth the lead core will give you.

ie. 3 colors of leadcore = 90 feet = 21 ft depth
50 foot mono leader
90 ft + 50 ft = 140 ft
look in your trolling book to give you the depth of your lure with 140 ft of line out.

Lure X = 10 ft deep with 140 ft of line
Total depth of lure = 21 ft (leadcore) + 10 ft (lure) = 31 ft down.

Hope this helps

I have beeen using leadcore for over 15 years now. I have found if you are trolling between 1.5 to 2 miles per hour I get from 4 to 5 feet of depth per color. So if I see fish suspended at 22 feet, I will go with 4 colors. It is better to run your lure a little shallow than too deep. I have found that both walleyes and trout will come up several feet to strike, but not down.

I use 18 lb leadcore with a 10 foot leader for walleyes and a 30 foot leader for trout and salmon. I also use a 7 ft ugly stick as my trolling rod. It has a very soft action and acts like a big shock absorber when big fish strike. I hope this helps.

Folks often forget that with more leadcore out, the more lift you get at all but the slowest possible speeds. On a deep lake in Maine (Sebago) we were able to get down 75 ft to catch lake trout, but only by using the electric on slowest setting and trolling flatfish (deep wigglers). My biggest complaint about leadcore is the hassle it creates when other lines get into it -- walleyes don't usually create a problem, but watch out if you hook a Chinook.
