moundwood and barns creek were the only places not froze last Sunday. Fished in moundwood for about and hour-blanked and did't see any caught. haven't been back since

The main lake is open today with large rollers & caps. Shove ice is piled to within 100' of the Chippewa launch ramp & hopefully will be gone by this eve.

The Lakeview basin ramp is now open to the Main. The Main is very clear, but the humps stand-out as yellow circles & the Northside is stirred-up/muddy with the breezy day.

Last Monday moundwood was partially frozen with a TON of debris. So much debris that it was impossible to fish. There were around 100 1lb shad laying dead on the shore because of idiot fishermen catching and leaving them on shore. Talk about biting the hand of the hand that feeds us.
The water temp is around 33 degrees so it doesn't take long to refreeze.

What you saw was simply a winter shad kill. Happens every year.Dont know of anyone who fishes for shad and how you would do it. They are gizzard shad!

Oh yeah, I know about the winter chad kill. From what I have noticed over the years, it only kills the small shad. I saw people catching shad and throwing them on shore thinking that they were getting the shad out of the way to catch Saugeye.

Sauggie,
Dont like to disagree, but the following was found in a Google search.
"gizzard shad will not take a baited hook","feed exclusively on phytoplankyon and zoo plankton". Dont believe me? Go to the following web site.

.. they are so thick that they are bein' snagged by the guys slingin' for S-Eyes.
We had alot of rain last nite with more on the way -- the North & South Forks of the GMR should be runnin' n' risin'.

I have caught a ton of the slimy devils this winter . Only the bigger ones will hit your bait . They start eating things other than plankton when they reach a pound or more . Jigging spoons jig and a minnow you name it I have caught them not snagged . Moundwood was open last night Friday 01-02-04 but real muddy out to the point .
