I heard a rumor that walleye are being caught at the Sturgeon Hole. Any truth to that? Is it safe to be out there yet? Wouldn't want to run into any floating ice.

Can't confirm your report, but I haven't seen any ice for over a week. I'd call it safe. Just the weather to contend with now.

I have seen the boats on the Hole and they are catching a few walleyes. Strong N winds will muddy things up for the weekend. I am picking up my boat Sat and will be giving it a try next week. I have not seen any ice in a week in the Stur Hole.

See you on the water,

It is located at the N end of the river. The mouth of Lake St. Clair and Detroit River.

The Sturgeon Hole is directly east of Peche Island. It is a deep(30 foot)hole leading into the river. It drops from 6 feet to 30 feet rather quickly. It is clearly labeled on a Hot Spots map. It is in Canadian waters so make sure to have your canadian license. Good luck and make sure to post your results.

The Sturgeon Hole is technically in Lake St Clair. So look at the Lake St Clair hot spot map for exact location.

Remember since it is in the lake, there is a slot limit in effect.
Only one fish over 46cm/18.1 inches may be in possession and up to 6 total fish per person.

So if you fish the river, then enter the Sturgeon hole with more than one fish over 46cm/18.1 inches, they WILL issue you a ticket.

Good clarification, Keith.

Six fish limit with a slot, unless you drift downstream where it becomes a four fish limit with no slot. Move down to the U.S. side by Celeron, and you go from no slot to no fishing at all. I think I'll play it safe and stay near Wyandotte this spring.;)

Gentleman,

Check the MI DNR's website and see what they designate as the Detroit River/Lake Erie Boundary.

By definition the boundary extends in a straight east/west line at the southern tip of Celeron Island. This leaves many areas on the southern end of Grosse Ile open to walleye fishing. (Cross Dike, Sugar Island/Devil's Cut, Livingstone Channel

You can call it overkill but I have printed off a copy of the map here:
http://www.michigandnr.com/PUBLICATIONS/PDFS/fishing/2004WalleyeRegs.pdf

I am in the process of getting this laminated and keeping it in my handlining box. If the DNR wants to hassle me about this they can write me a ticket and we can settle it in court. It would be really worth taking the day off of work to spend a day in court fighting a "nuisance" ticket like this.

I have a feeling that the MI DNR is going to harrass alot of anglers this season......

Forgot to mention this earlier... But, I made it out on on Sunday. The southwest wind made things a mess..... The river was rough, only saw two boats trying to jig south of the power plant....... We did not plan on walleye fishing... We just fished the marinas and canals for some perch and crappie....

I updated my reports page if you guys are interested.

They've already said that they WILL be checking catches at the ramps as well as patrols out on Erie during the closure. I've seen them rail people for launching in the Huron River while it was closed, getting eyes on Erie legally, then bust them when they cross back into the Huron to where they launched from. Not fishing, just to load the boat.

I'll keep them distracted for you all. My first eye last year came in the shallows on the East side of Celeron. Less than 100 yards from the boundary. I'll be right back there again. I'm sure I'll have they're attention fishing that close to the line. :)

Where is there a boat ramp at the north end of the river? I use to use a ramp at Alter Rd. but I am not sure if my current rig would make the launch there.
