I have a 3 hour drive and have next wed. and thurs. off. Is it to early to fish the detroit river? I hate to spend the money and drive that far to not catch anything.
Thanks in advance for any answers..

Check with Steve or Kathy Lyell, at the Wyandotte boat landing & Bait
Call 734-284-6774, they'll give you current reports on the fishing. Great people, secure parking, they will help you launch if your alone, shuttle you to & from your vehicle. Have fun, Pat
Check the website www.wbramp.com I think it is the same people as the previous post. Good luck and make sure to post a report.

the 17th, 18th isnt too early but fishing is generally slower than end of march/ early april
it is a great time to nail a big one though, my brother caught an 11.5 lb walleye on march 16 a couple years back - we only caught two fish though all day that day
water clarity becomes an issue - if its muddy it gets real tough - sometimes you see handliners do well in the mud - i dont know enough about handlining

If you decide to go out this early don't expect a lot of fish but what you do catch very well could be a wall hanger. I start running charters as early as the last week in March and have alot of luck in Trenton channel and also the Wyandotte area. The Wyandotte launch already has the bigger minnows so I would suggest starting there!
Fishing tip: Hook your minnow upside down and put a small piece of rubber on after it. This does 2 things 1: It holds the minnow on the hook 2: By hooking it upside down the minnow stays straight on the hook easier and the fish react positively!!!!!

I appreciate your time responding and I have decided to go. I usually launch at Erie metro, and get my minnows at bottom line. How much further to Wyandotte?

If you're coming from out of town from I-75, you exit at Southfield road. 10 minutes shorter or longer, depending on which way you're coming. Another good way to keep those shiners on is to get some
Downrivertackle(in the directory) Stinger Jigs and hook the stinger right before the tail fin. The 30# steel stinger lead keeps the shiner pinned up on the jig barb. They're available right at the Wyandotte Ramp also. For giant shiners, I just use a small hair rubberband at the bend of the main hook and over the stinger lead to keep them in place. I'll probably be out one of those days, so if you're coming, drop me an e-mail and I'll meet up with you and point out some descent starting points and toss you a few jigs.

They already said it. I find the fish are in pockets this time of year and widely scattered. It is very cold water, the fish bite soft. You might catch a few, but fish your jigs real slow.
Go get em, sure beats sitting at home.

Weather permitting, I do plan on getting out this weekend, if nothing else but to run the boat and play with the new electronics. Let me know what day you'll be out.

I'm not too eager to drag the boat through this melting snow (especially the salt) anytime too soon. Unless we get some kind of drastic warm-up before weekend, she's staying warm in the garage for another week.
