Was out there this weekend? The water was muddy with all the wind and the fishing was very, very slow. Was checked by GFP guy when I came in and he said things were very slow. He hadn't seen many fish brought in.

Fished Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning and the two of brought in five fish. The wind was outrageous on Saturday. The fish we caught were on 3/8 thumper jigs in 20` of water close to the main channel. Tried the crow creek area and didn't have much luck at all. The water clarity was awful and Sunday morning the ramp was glare ice. We were lucky and got our boat in with no problems except for sliding backwards about the final six feet of ramp to the very edge of the water. I saw a gentleman and his wife jackknife and slide the last ten feet into the water and knock their boat hard against the dock in doing so. They were very lucky in the angle that their boat took, a couple of feet either way and they would have crushed the lower unit of their outboard. People always seem to forget to check the ramp for ice this time of year. A couple of handfuls of sand would have gone a long way.

I'll be in an Alumacraft. Either mine (Magnum 175CS), my father-in-law's TP175, or my friends TS175. Probably mine if I have any say, because I want to get my boat in the water ASAP!!
By the way, like your website:)

Well, you and the Corps are perfect examples of why they had to drop the limits down to 3 on Lake Francis Case. Do you have any idea of how many fish those females could have potentially produced during the spawn this year not to mention to next few.....

Corps did more damage in one year than all the fisherman combined on all the missouri reservoirs last year. Its just gonna take 3or 4 more years to see it.
3 daily llimit and the posession stays at 8? Whats up with that? That alone tells me that it was more of a political move to push fishermen and $$ back up to the more liberal limits of Oahe. They have been suffering up there since Walleyegate.
Lake Sharpe is chuck full of eating sized fish, but the limit stays at 6. Again, another move to push fishermen back to Oahe. Its gonna work too, because thats where Im heading. I guess they are pretty smart after all, or else Im just a sheep that can be led.
Dont get me wrong, something had to be done to limit the take out of these lakes, but do it with effective, enforceable restrictions and not politically motivated hogwash. The guides on Francis Case and Sharpe attended most of the meetings discussing this issue, and did not get one thing they asked for. Can you say Slot Limit? Think about it. It seems so simple to those who actually use the fishing resource on the lake. Why cant they understand that fishermen are going to take what they legally can? Always have, always will. No amount of education will change that. Alot of 20-25 inch fish will be killed, because of the new regulation.
COE has put alot of water in Case in the last 3 weeks, it appears they are setting it up for another post spawn flush like last year. At least the potential is there, if the downstream states call for more water. Case is gonna suffer again. Rounds is filing suit to try to stop it, but it has not stopped it in the past. Another year of wasted spawing efforts will be disastrous. All the effort into showing that the recreation industry in South Dakota and North Dakota and Montana is several times larger than the total barge industry will be moot, if the COE can eliminate that segment of the recreational value on Case and Sharpe. The fisherman just go away, and so does the $$$$.

The control of the Missouri is frustrating! I did a little research and what aggravated me the most was the fact that nearly 80% of the barge traffic on the Big Muddy is short haul shipping. Basically short haul shipping hauls dredge material from the channel of the river to the shore so the other barges can float.

Went out for the day yesterday (Wednesday). Weather was awesome. Fishing was hit and miss. Went with 4 guys (including myself) in 2 boats. Friend & I caught our limit and the other boat was skunked. Talked to a couple of other boats and they had one or none in theirs as well. I think the key word for yesterday was SLOW. We were barely moving, staying as vertical as possible. Boats were motating around us. Caught our fish in 16-21 feet of water.
Filleted the fish at Allen's Hillside around 6:00 and there were not very many walleyes in the garbage can.
Water was still chilly, anywhere from 39-41 degrees. It's early and the fishing will get better.
I think one of the big problems along with the corps is all the out of state fishermen that come and take alot of female fish out before they are able to spawn. They shouldn't be able to come over here when they can't even fish for them in there own state so they have to come over and kill our fishery. They really should have cut the limit down to 2 a day.

Everytime people start talking about limited fish populations and limits there always seem to be someone from SD that will point the finger at the nonresidents. Remember if you are pointing one finger at someone else you have 3 more pointing back at yourself. Nonresidents probably make an average of 2-4 trips per year to SD. The few fish they take is a fraction of the fish taken by local meat hogs that can fish every weekend or even everyday, sometimes even double dipping. This has been debated too many times but I could not refrain from commenting after such a rediculous comment. Spring is finally here, let's go enjoy it. ;^)
You better think about the amount of money that out of staters bring into your state. And not only that, it's federal tax dollars that built those dams and gave you south dakotans what you now have. Otherwise it would look like it does from KC to St. Louis.

Was out there last week, first day we got limit. There Wed and Thur. this week, got limit Wed. when the wind picked up for about 30 min.s
Thurs.wind didn't pick up and got one. The males are shooting sperm, no females were caught this week. Week ago 1/2 were females.
IMO the fish numbers are way down. There is a reason the limit dropped to 3 this year. I belive we will see the fish numbers drop every year. Too much pressure and too #### many tournaments.

Fished Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Morning until 10:00 then had to hit the road. Overall fishing is slower than previous years due to lower populations. The three of us ended up with 19, 30, and 4 on the respective days. Cleaned nine on each of the first 2 days none of which were females. We actually culled females out for a smaller males to keep. Its easy to check if they are females right now. Weather was beautiful until this morning(25 mph winds). Water temps are 39-45 north of town. Found warmer water south of town Thursday afternoon but it was very muddy and the fish weren't there yet. At least I couldn't find them. With water temps rising like they are I would expect some fish to move up on the rocks in town fairly soon. I'll be back out there in 2 weeks to check it out.

Perhaps one of the solutions to this problem is that we should be regulating our fishing season like some of the surrounding states. If we weren't abusing the system and overfishing the resource in the pre-spawn time line, perhaps we would have a better fishery. The Corp carries its own guilt in the management of the river too. I fish the river as much as anyone and will agree that the parking lot seems to be filled with out of state vehicles, especially until late May. But the remainder of the season is dominated by local SD fisherman. I see a tremendous amount of people doing the right things and the wrong things to the river, regardless of where they came from. Maybe things would change if we all policed ourselves a little better and released more fish instead of trying to take our limit each time we go fishing. Most of the fisherman I know have fish in the freezer at home, but still think they need to bring home fresh fish. The fish in the freezer stay there indefinately. Maybe its everyone's entitlement attitude that is the problem.

Speaking of a ridiculous comment, let's consider yours. The idea that South Dakotans are alone in the use of the "out of stater" comment is less than accurate. We have all heard it every time we venture outside of our home territory. The "out of stater" terminology is perhaps the most overused comment in outdoor sports and recreation. The perception of the "out of stater" is always in the eye of the beholder or the fortunate sportsman who has the resource in their area. In virtually every state I have fished or hunted, the "in stater" is more than happy to have you move along home, unless they are making a profit from your visit. As far as I can tell, game violations occur everywhere and not just by the visiting or resident sportsperson. Perhaps if we all did a better job policing ourselves and adhering to ethical standards in the field or on the water, we would have fewer anti-fishing and hunting interests nipping at our heels, chipping away at us. It seems to me that we should have better things to consider instead of pointing the finger at each other, because, as you say, there might be some pointing back at you.
