If anyone's interested in seeing a few pics from my trip to Quetico (the boundary waters, Canadian Side) this summer, my friend has them posted @

http://hometown.aol.com/smokythebear00/Mypics.html

There's a link to the second page of them at the bottom of the page. I figured everyone might like to see some fish pics to get ready for spring. (as if we need more aniticipation, right?)

Enjoy,

James

I'm not sure if I'm inspired or sick. Either way, thank you for reminding me what summer looks like.

Great pics, James. BTW, when you refer to North Bay, are you talking about the North Bay of Basswood? I used to camp there alot with my Dad and others years back and it brings back alot of good memories. Also, what time of year were you up there? Thanks for sharing with us.

Some dandy smalies there, well it looks like I have something more to look foreward to when i go to the BWCA in the spring than I did this winter (for 7 days, got back this tuesday, BRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!) Hopefully ill be able to hook into a few good smalies like those. Its a beautifull area and hopfully it will be preserved for years to come. MarbleEyes

Yep, that's the one. We camped on an island in the south-eastern part of the bay on our first night, and on john's island teh last few nights of our trip. The rest of the trip was spent camping on south lake in the s-chain. That was a sweet trip. We fished mostly for bass, but I managed to jig up some eye's in a few narrows areas. No one else knew they were in the lake we were fishing, but I picked up about 12 in an hour of drifting the current in 7 ft of water.

One day we'll have to organize the WC Quetico trip. :)

Now that would be sweet!
Until then, I hope it warms up soon.

Forgot to say- we were up there in early August and the topwater bite for huge smallies was insane. Next time you're out for smallies, try a zara puppy- cast it long an walk it back vigorously over the top of structure or down a weedline and have someone there to start your heart back up after a big smallie clears the water and takes off with the spook!

Man, North Bay brings back alot of memories. Actually, I know a guide who fishes Basswood quite a bit. He told me, that in the evenings in August, towards evening, as the ciscos come up to feed on the surface, schools of BIG smallies will smash into them on the surface of open water areas. They wait out towards the open water in their canoes, and sometimes using binoculars, they will spot birds diving or a big commotion on the surface of the water. Then, they will paddle over as fast as they can. They use white Zara's on top. Great action, BIG smallies. I love those lakes!

We came across a really neat situation while we were up there...

We were casting to shore with the small spooks and we would occasionally hear a commotion behind us, but it would quickly subside. I decided to keep my eye out for whatever it was that was splashing around, adn within a minute i saw something break the surface of the water and blast through the surface film while baitfish exploded out of the water, fleeing in all directions. My friend and I paddled on afterburners to get out to where the commotion was and we discovered a rock hump came up from deep water and topped off at about 16ft. For the rest of the day we casted surface baits over the hump and caught 20+ inch smallies all day long. It was awesome!!! If you head up through North Lake, teh hump is about 100-200 yards off shore from the shore straight east of John's Island. Also, we found some 'eyes in the back corner of north bay by the rocky portage entrance in North bay from burke lake.
Enjoy your trip,

James
