We have plans to fish the Port Clinton area of Erie this Sun 5/02 through Tues 5/04. Will the weather and bite be worth driving 800 miles? Thanks for any help you can give and we need to finalize our plans.

The walleye scattered this past weekend and have not schooled back up in the large schools I expect to see this time of year. The RCL tournament is going on now through Saturday and about 1/2 of them got three fish or less today. Now the eyes could school back up tomorrow and you could have a really good week but right now my best guess would be to wait another week. Watch my web site for reports, as soon as I can find them it will be reported on the web page.

Dean, Thanks for the advise. With the big blow today and tomorrow, the bite might get real tough and the weather is not looking so great either for the first of next week. I hate to change our plans, but with a drive of 800 miles, I'd like to have either the cooperation of the fish, or the weather. I need to decide tomorrow or Friday morning at the latest. I'll keeping checking your website. Thanks for all of your help.

I would say with all this unstable weather, I would wait
a week or so as Dean suggests. The bite is spotty. Out
of 170+ pros fishing the RCL tournament - about half did
not bring in their boat limit of 5 fish today. Waves in
the afternoon were 5 ft. The guys said it was ROUGH.

There were some limts, but fishing was not red hot for
the majority. Those catching their limits, all said they
had to really work for them.

I would check the weather at....

http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/pub/data/text/FZUS61/KCLE.TXT

and be sure you're not fighting high winds, waves and
facing a cold front, which is due to arrive this weekend.

The fish will be here. Wait until the bite is HOT and
then make the trip. No use spending on gas and your time
to take part is a questionable adventure - at best.

We want you to have a great time and have a great catch,
but things are not optimal yet.

I just came from the RCL in Port Clinton, fishing was good last week but the wind picked up and made it tough to get to and from the hot spots. I only managed to boat three fish on day on and had to settle for 81st place with day two being canceled. Wednesday was the worst day I had in the 8 days I was there. I would recomend waiting for the weather to cooperate before you take the 754 mile drive from here to Port Clinton to fight the 5 to 7 footers we fought to get back in time for check in.
