It got off to a slow start this year. Much like last year as far as the cold spring weather keeping the walleye a little lethargic on the opener. But the bite has seemed to pick up the last couple days. Yesterday, we had guests get their limit between Gladstone and Escanaba. And they put many fish back too. My brother Kenneth started the day on Big Bay but found no active fish. So he and his clients came back to Little Bay and ended up with eight keepers. These also came from between Escanaba and Gladstone. And all 18 fish came on floating jigheads tipped with a small piece of crawler. Did see some nice fish come out of Big Bay last Wednesday from in front of the Fishdam River. Once we get a south wind again, those fish should move back in there. Also saw some nice fish from Ogontz Bay. They were taken in 3-5 feet of water up in the northwest corner. The bays are loaded with fish, but the cold spring has really slowed the bite. Infact, after the rain two days ago, the water temperature in the Escanaba River dropped 10 degrees down to 49 degrees! That doesn't help. Also, as far as the Escanaba River is concerned, we had guests catching their limits trolling Rapalas in 3-5 feet of water at night. I say had because they just went home today. Hope this helps and good luck out there...
